I've got a chance to pick up a used set of AKG K240DF's for $79.
DF stands for Diffuse Field, which refers to the fact that they "follow the criteria specified by the IRT in Munich for a 'diffuse field' equalization curve that provides headphone listeners with the sound pattern and characteristics of a room with reflective, non-anechoic surfaces."
The reviews I've read indicate that I should jump on these. Anyone have a thought to add?

I love them--they have a nice balanced frequency response, which is helpful in checking mixes. However, they don't have a strong bass response, and at 699 ohms (I think) they take a fair amount of power to drive. Also, they're not good for close-mic tracking because they're semi-open, hence you get bleed.

699 ohms! That's 99 more ohms than my headphone amp can drive! *LOL* Thanks for the response. About the bass response.....is it like the bass goes away when you turn off your monitors and slip on the phones, or is it just that they don't push the bass the way most consumer phones do?

It's not just that they don't *push* the bass in an unnatural way, but rather I think they lack the extended bass that some other cans have.

But they sound pretty sweet otherwise.

As an alternative, you could try the Audio Technica ATH M40fs, which also have a fairly flat response (mine sound a touch "boxy" but not too bad) and have a little more bass. They're a closed design that also work for tracking.

I've heard good things about the Sennheiser HD 580 and 600, which are more expensive but also more accurate, supposedly, though I've never tried them.
