Hi All,

Can anyone out there tell me what they think of the following AKG drum mic setup?

1x D112 for bass drum
5x C418 (clip on) for 4x toms and 1x snare
2x C1000s for overheads

Any good? I'm thinking of buying.

hmmm.. i dont know how you will like the C418s on toms, i think there are much better mics, if you want clip ons or even not, i think the sennheiser e604 is a really good tom mic. for snare SM57 over a C418 any day, and kick drums D112 = good. Overheads, those are entry level, does that mean bad, no. But i ihave no experience with them. Rode have the NT3 but nobody here has tried them, and i havent seen any reviews. For overheads you might want to taqkes some considerations; If you are planning acoustic guitar or any other acoustic instrument a pair of NT1s will cost the same as C1000s and will be more versatile as you can also record vocals with them. My opinions.

Cheers Kristian,

The only thing is, I'm working on a budget and I know I can get all the above AKG mics for around £650. Are the c418 mics on toms bearable (with drum tuning/mic placement/EQ etc)or just absolutely useless?

I am aware of the Sennheiser mics, but not sure of the prices and if they do a package or not? I would expect an 8 mic Sennheiser package to be quite a bit more than £650.

Any ideas?

you know, the thing is im moving to texas in 2 months so all the prices ive been looking at are in $$$ lately not £££. As you ask, the 418s will be bearable and most likely sound really good for a demo, its just the flexibility of the other mics i said. how are you going to record a guitar cab, you could use one of those 3 which you said, i just dont know how desireable the sound will be.

I bought some AKG C418 for toms and found out that they DO NOT work on toms. I switched to the Sennheiser e604 as quick as I could. You can buy a package deal of three e604 for just under $300 US. The C418 do work great for overheads, so if you were looking at the AKG drum pack (D112 $ two C418), you still can. BTW, I use the C418 for my overheads. Check out my MP3 files on http://www.idrive.com visit Fishmed to see the C418 in overhead action.

I bought two of the Audio Technica KitPak's, and they sound just fine on my toms. The package contains 2 snare/high tom mics and two low tom mics, and with a little EQ'ing I was very happy with the sound. The 4-pack cost me $179, which I think is a good deal. I actually use Sony ECM-66 lav mics on both my ride and hats, and they sound great. D112 on the kick. Still looking for the right overheads. A friend has a pair of matched Earthworks SR77's, which sound incredible, so I think I'm going to break down and do the same. If anyone has any Earthworks mics for sale, I'm looking.

The D-112 is THE kick mic and the 1000's as over heads are good too. I would substitute SM-57's for the others though.

affordable drum overheads (IMHO) = Oktava MK012 all day long. Sorry abot that I just got a pair and I love em'

Oops...TrackRat, I think you meant that the D-112 is THE kick mic IF you don't have a EV-RE 27 n/d..... :)
