Akg D112

i just bought the AKG D112 mic At guitar Center and im just wondering is this a good bass drum mic? i wanted to know peoples experiances with this mic?
 
It can be good depending on the specific application.

I have 2.


Sometimes its the right mic and sometimes its not...

Good luck with finding out where it fits...have some fun experiementing.

I like it. I have a couple of them. They're good as a second tight mic on a guitar amp too (on an open back amp, on the back with the porlarity flipped).

I like mine! I have it just inside the port, but plan on moving it closer to the head to get more click sound.

the AKG D112 and the Shure Beta 52 are considered some of the standards for bass drum mics, so you're right on track. I personally opted for the Beta 52, but really it was darn close to a toss-up between them.
 
i like mine. im doing more live sound now, and it sounds awesome. the only thing is i cant get the lows up too high because theyll start resonating if its too far inside the kick. i need to get a compressor. but its a rad mic.

How far into the kick are you putting it? You can actually get a nice controlled low-end response by running it FURTHER into the drum. I generally place my Beta 52 about 3-4 inches from the batter head. This gets a nice balance of the attack from the beater, and also the low resonance from the shell.
 
yea i havent tried it that close before. its right on the outside. ill try that later tonight and tell ya how it goes. do u ahve it offest of the beater, like a few in ches to one side. or just right on target with the beater jsut a few inches back?
 
A compressor will make it resonate more. What you want is a noise gate.

Nice! it looks like i do have a good mic lol does anyone know anythign about a drum tuner because my drumer cant tune worth shit lol
 
I have 2 d112's and 2 B-52's I like them both. They are also cool on bass guitar.

As far as tuning the kick drum, tune the head loose. Just tight enough to get the wrinkles out. I like the Evans EMAD heads.
 
Everyone I spoke to mentioned that the D112 has a peak at about 5kHz. For that reason, most prefered it for live rock shows. So, I chose the Beta 52. I would rather EQ 5kHz into the mix than try to take it out. Also the Beta seems to pick up more "thud", as most have put it.

I always aim the mic at a point on the beater head about 2 inches to the side of where the beater impacts, with the mic anywhere from 2-4 inches from the head.

Sounds like a good starting point. Definitely play around with the positioning of that kick mic. Only your ears can tell you what you really like, what really sounds good. I would suggest moving it just a little farther away from the front head. It has nice attack, but is a little lacking in the depth. Backing it up should bring back a bit of that depth.

Is that lastwinter.mp3 you or someone else?

Really, the best thing you can do is experiment. Place the mic and set your EQ flat, then do a little recording. Play back the recording while sweeping the EQ arround all over the place just to see what kind of affect different settings have. Then move the mic to a different position and do the same thing.
 
ok i'll try that, the damn mic wont stay on the mic stand...it kinnda sux that i have to tape it on...
 
Oh yeah...that's the one downside to the D112. With the Beta 52, the mic itself actually screws right on to the boom.
