hey leadoff,
i'm not sure what the beta 52 sounds like, but i've been using the D112 and i think it sounds great.

The d112 is becoming the industry standard in recording micing kick drums. Beta 52 is ok but not as good as the d112. The d112's frequency responce works very well with kick. You have to try to get a bad sound out of it.

Thanks for the replies!

One more thing now that we've narrowed it down. What about placement? In your experience, what seems to work best with the D112?

I like a good "punchy" attack--nothing overpowering, especially concerning resonance. The more subtle, the better.

I have been using a 58 on the kick, and all I can manage is a mere "thud." I usually place the mic about 2-3 inches behind the sound hole of my kick--inside of the kick seems to lack the definition for which I am looking. I am hoping a change in my microphone choice will make the difference!

Let me know what you think!

I have a set of d112s and they are great. also on distorted bass cabs. I also jsut got a pair of those seinheissers that are for bass drums and they are good but have a darker sound.

I would get the d112
