there isnt really an answer to that. you have to try it and see if it works for you. the numbers of people that own them and suggest them say a little , if not much, about how well it is recieved.

I like the old EBs myself, and not the newer ones, but there is no doubt in my mind that you can get great results from them..

I guess I knew this was pretty subjective. I don't know what it is about the 414, but I really would like to try one to see. Maybe it's good marketing, but I would love to own a pair (not because of the GC guy though). :0)

your GC rep can blow me too.

U87 is a pro mic, along with 1000 other mics..

as far as the 414 and u87 being the only two mics.. he was trying to sell you the mic, and he doesnt know shit. go back there and asked him about peluso's, blues, gefells etc.

he'll know plenty about the ones the store sells, even though the asswipe has never used a single one of them.

i hate them..

when i go to GC, i look for the old guys, they typically know there shit. the young people are asswipes.

I don't know that I would say they are hyped. Maybe I'm not hanging around in the same places...

The 414 is a useful mic, just as an SM57 is or whatever other mic you think of as a "workhorse". It is not going to blow anyone away on most things, but it will work pretty well on most things.

I've got a couple that I tend to use as Tom mics a lot (although not live - just in the studio). I know some people love them as OH's, but I've got other mics for that. They wouldn't be anywhere near the first thing I would put up in front of a singer, although I've had good luck using them on violin and trumpet from time to time. The multiple pattern, pad, and roll-off settings make them pretty versatile.

They are nice basic mics. Nothing that is going to make most people orgasm though. And as has been said, I'm a little suspicious of the newest models, since AKG has a history (as does Neumann) of redesigning models that end up inferior to the earlier versions, although I'm sure they would insist the opposite was true.
