Got one of these on loan, Anybody have experience with these mic's and what best suits their application?

The only use I can find for it so far is on hats :(

Also, got a silver U87. It intermittently works. Any idea what may be wrong with it? I know it's a little vague, but I've aquired the mic. ANy idea of cost of fixing it?

Also is there any generic (cheap) shockmounts I can get for it, Im asuming the nuemann ones will cost a small fortune!

I've used them in theatre, I've used them on wind sections of orchestra's in the pit, a cello sounds good through one one these. I've used them for over heads, micing up flutes and clarinets, I've also used them as lecturn mic's before now. They are a decent small condenser. :)

PS, try one on an acoustic guitar

Since when is a U87 a small condenser? Does somebody other than Neumann use the U87 designation? It's a large diaphagm condenser, and a rather good one. People will put it down, but it has stuck around for years in many studios. If you have one that's malfunctioning, get it fixed. Then use the nice expensive German mic, and I bet you get better sound than a C1000S. What is the C1000S good for? It's not a bad "marital aid", but God, don't *sing* into it.-Richie

I've had great success using the C1000s as a paper weight. I bought a pair back in the mid 90's, used them once and it took me 5 years to find a sucker err a home recordist to buy them for $150. If you do a google search on that mic you will find the negative comments by far exceed the postive comments.

I would get the U87 repaired. Contact Neumann USA for direction. Good luck!

Well, I'm not expert and I admittedly don't have the best ears, being a drummer and all...But I use a pair of C1000's as overheads and wouldn't call them "horrendous", as I've heard some people say. In the above link, most of the criticism contradicts other criticism. A lot of people say they're harsh, then someone comes out and says they're "horrnedous" because they sound really "dull"...It can't be both.

Next criticism I read, the person says they sound terrible, then qualifies it by saying "Of course it wasn't a good room or preamp either." Well, duh...Don't blame the mic for that. The same person goes on to say this: "But I heard a guy the
other (a home recordist) that did an absolutely amazing acappela vocal track
(about 6 parts, all him) with the C1000. I couldn't believe it." Confused, maybe???

I'm not sticking up for them just because I own a pair. I figure there's got to be a reason so many people dislike them. But I don't think people should decide something's crap just because they "read somewhere" that they're crap. Decide for yourself...In a good room....with a good pre-amp. Then you can call them crap.

It is just plain bad. I've got a good room and sweet preamps, nothing good ever happened when I tried to apply a c1000s. In fact, I still can't get that taste out of my mouth.

Fine...At least you found out for yourself, in what you say is a good room. That's all I was saying.

I too am not a big fan of the C1000's. 6 or 7 years ago they were decent for the price (due to the lack of alternatives at the time). I have however discovered a few uses for them. They actually work very well on stage with micing a banjo, some acoustics, and even certain mandolins. Based on hundreds of uses live though, I have not tried them (nor had the desire to) in the studio.

I think they are primarily used for live sound reinforcement. They have an adapter included that can really tighten up the pattern for feedback control. They are fairly common in bluegrass circles as xstatic suggests. Fiddlers and dobro players seem to be fond of them. I play dobro and use one live sometimes.

He was referring to the C1000 as the SDC....not the U87 ;)
