Ive heard bad and good reviews about these mics.
Musicians freind has a 2 for $299 offer, They are usually $199 each. Seems like a good deal. Any thoughts??
(on price and mic)

I had the same questiong as him as well. I was looking into buying a pair from musicians friend. I wanted to use them as overheads or miking other instruments. What do you guys think?

I have a pair of them and I like them but, I don't care for them as drum overheads. They tend to be a bit mid rangy and they just don't have that airy shimmer that Ilook for in the cymbals when used as overheads. I'll tell you where they shine though, on a guitar cab they're now the first mic I reach for over a SM-57. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy 'em for that application alone.

I tried one, it's not bad. But check out the Nady SCM 1000. Mus. Friend has them (not advertised in their catalog) for $149, and it kicks anything in it's price range. Large diaphragm condenser, low cut switch, multi pattern switch, -10db switch, very clean, quiet. Note this is NOT the SCM 900, which MF has for $99. That doesn't compare.

NT3

I really like my Rode NT3. I sounds really good on guitar and cymbals. Many people like it better than the C1000 and you can get 2 for $200. The only thing is that this mic is really loud (many would agree). But the tone is really cool.

I can't really give you any personal advice but I do know that everybody on rec.audio.pro absolutely hates the AKG C1000s, and those guys know their shit. Do a search on groups.google.com and you'll see what I mean. Instead of the AKGs, those guys would probably recommend a pair of Marshall MXL-603s, which can be found for about $50 each.

I really like mine. I record fingerstyle guitar, both steel and nylon, with them. I get a wonderful sound. I have even used one for vocals and gotten good results. I guess it all depends on the kind of music, or specific application, you're planning on using them for.
