AKG 414 mics

Hi, I was just wondering if somebody could please explain to me the differences between the various models of 414's and what their typical applications are? Thanks.
 
im not too sure on the different makes, but im sure you could find them here... www.akg.com

as far as uses go... everything... its considered a reference mic for a reason. i love it on acoustic stringed instruments. its great on some vocals too. but then again, thats just my ears. you'll have to try them before you know if you like them. though i cant think of anyone who would slam the 414...
 
I think the only difference (at least between the XL II and the XLS) is the difference in this (at least in specs).

XL - II Signal/Noise Ratio (A-weighted): 88 dB
XLS - Signal/Noise Ratio: 88 dB

whatever A-weighted means.

As far as sound, I'm not sure you'll find much of a difference. I would venture to say that if you record the same thing on either mic, no one would be able to tell the difference.

:confused: That means they have the same S/N ratio....that's not the difference.


The difference, at least acording to AKG is that the XL II is suited more (in terms of freq response) for solo vocals/solo instruments. In other words, it's more colored, and probably has a presence peak. The XLS is pretty flat and uncolored. It's more universal in application. Of course, you can always experiment with either one. Rememer - if it sounds good, it is good.

As far as the different versions of each go - you'd have to talk to someone who has tried them all to get an answer on that. From what I've heard, the recently discontinued versions are one of the best bang-for-buck mic purchases out there right now.
