Akai 1710w

Upon further examination I took off the middle cover in back to expose one belt on the capstan and I didn't have time tonight to take anymore off, so I can't really tell if it's loose or not...doesn't 'appear' to be. There is a skinny pulley belt on the one reel. The take up spool moves, so I assume it gets its drive from the capstan. However, when I mount a reel and thread it all of a sudden, everyone is reluctant to move beyond a snail's pace. One more observation, without a reel on it, it seems to not be consistent as far as engaging the roller. I can put it in play and the capstan rotates, but the roller doesn't fully engage, while other times it does. Again, there seems to be no difference now between the low and high speeds. It seems to be more willing to show movement in low speed first...then high speed. And as long as the motor is running, the fan blade is. I am going to try to have my brother in law look at it.

I was amazed at how clean it was inside given it's apparent age.
