I think Madaudio was giving an honest appraisal of the song purely on its merits. You cannot use a writer's personal shortcomings as an excuse for poor art. If I was to try writing in French, it wold suck, because my French sucks. I wouldn't expect people to treat it with any degree of respect.
I appreciate your coming to my defense, 32-20-Blues, but this is more about a private discussion I had with TelePaul recently, and despite not being able to see his recent responses since he's now on my ignore list, I can say that I think he is as full of shit as he probably thinks I am.

TelePaul, your anonymous neg-repping me contradicts everything you said to me in those exchanges. So I take it back - you're no idealist. At least I'm honest even if I'm being a dick.

Actually you anonomously (?) neg repped me, check your facts. You also neg repped me twice for the same thing. Thats BS. Have a nice day.

But you dismiss effort in that way.

Of course I do. Since when does effort win prises? It's results. Effort has no place in art. It shouldn't mean anything to the listener, or viewer, whether it comes easily for the artist to produce something.

???Effort has no place in art?????
I hate to bust your bubble 32-20, but art is all about effort. If you think that
your best stuff is just gonna fall outa your mouth and fingers, think again.!
Maybe your Mom or your non-musician girlfriend will get all gooey over your "art", but the world is way more demanding and way more hip than you think. The art-part lies in the re-write. Until you have sifted the language and polished the harmony, all you're gonna have is maybe cute and catchy. You could even have a hit record with it, but that don't make it art. There is a lot of pure crap out there, and a lot of it gets on the radio, but it ain't art.
It's entertainment, nothing more.

Thank you for that entertaining, if irrelevant, diversion. Obviously art is about effort as far as the artist is concerned, but the point I actually made was that it is not judged on the basis of effort. It is, by and large, judged on its tangible merits, of which the effort expended by the artist in creating it is not one.

Furthermore, as for the world being 'more hip than you think', well, I have an innate distrust of those who use terms such as 'hip.' If, as you imply, effort is a validating force when it comes to art, then surely the world is sentimental. In the modern lexicon, my understanding is that 'hip' would constitute the antithesis of sentimentality. Of course, being a self-confessed 'terminally hip' person by nature, you should have a more definite grasp of this than myself.

When dealing with abstract arguments, I often find it necessary to provide a concrete example of my posited notion. So may we enter the world of hypothesis momentarily? Consider, if you will, a moderately talented yet fundamentally untutored young painter. If all of his devoted, well intentioned effort produces a second rate painting, is that painting worthy of first rate status? Hardly.
