heres the deal... i havent broke a cymbal ever until two days ago i was practicing and a noticed my sweet ride sounding weird...sure enough it was cracked but it was cracked by the bell area not the outside....its under warranty so i sent it back...i thought it was just a weird thing until i was playing a show tonight and cracked and A custom crash in the middle, not on the edge. What am i doing to make this happen, how can i prevent it?

I try to keep my cymbals at a height and angle that will cause the least unwanted stress, but as a fairly hard hitter there are some cymbals that I consider expendable. I try to preserve them as much as I can, but I know eventually my main crashes, chinas and Hi-hat tops will break. It's something I've come to accept and I don't stress about as long as I get a good year or so out of each one.

If you're noticing cracks along the inside, my guess is that perhaps your wing nuts may be too tight.

That's my guess also. Unless you need your cymbals in a nearly vertical position you should keep your wingnuts loose. Hint: I never use a washer above the top felt, as these will restrict cymbal movement, even with the wingnut loose. Short of these suggestions, unless you want to adjust your playing style, you can try lighter sticks and/or heavier cymbals, or just keep breakin' 'em, whichever works best for you :D

Where do you practice? I know that cymbals do not like getting hit when they are cold, so if you're in a garage, or a rehearsal facility with individual room heaters or whatever, give them plenty of time to reach a comfortable temperature. I may be totally off, but temperatures are dropping, and you're suddenly breaking stuff...

It can have to do with cymbal technique too. You could try hitting with a more glancing blow rather than a straight up-and-down "hammer" blow. Although with a ride, you might just have your washers tightened too much, especially if it's cracking from the hole.
