AHH! help with my digital recording

ok..all i want to do is record my guitar using cakewalk (Sonar XL2.0)..and of course..it doens't work

I decided to go direct since..I dont have a mic, etc....

and so ive got everything hooked up right..my line out is leading to the line in on my sound card. My speakers are playing the my guitar....meaning that there is no problem with the hookup

the problem is when i record...cakewalk records nothing...im using an adio track, it has recognized my sound card, ive used cakewalk before...(learnt how to use it in a course at school) so im not totally dumb with it....i know that the line in recording is turned on, in my volume controls

maybe problems are: windows XP?, im using the line in port (maybe have to configure something in cakewalk), or something else...
any input is appreciated...i just want to record!!!
 
Have you gone into the Windows mixer and set Line In as your recording source??
 
Did specify an input port for recording on the audio track properties and actually ARM the track for recording?

You wont record anything unless you tell Sonar where to look and where to put the data while its recording...
 
yeppers...well i believe so..now you've got questioning myself...

ive got the right input specified...i know that..
then i click the "R" button on the top right of the audio1 track window....

then i click the record button in the transport toolbar...
 
Don't take this as an insult, it's just that we don't really know your level of proficiency.

Are you sure you set Line In as the recording source in the Windows mixer, and not just as the playback source? It's a little unintuitive, so I just want to be sure we can rule that out.

I'm assuming you are using the sound card that came with your computer. If so, the line in port is likely to be a 1/8" stereo connection. What are you connecting to it? If you are connecting a mono source, you probably need to be selecting the left input as your source in Sonar. If you are selecting the right input, that could be your problem.

Describe your set up in a little more detail if none of the above works. What are your recording from? When you say the "line out" from your guitar, what exactly does that mean. Are you coming from a POD, an amp, a preamp, a mixer, a DI?

yes...i have the line in selected in the recording in volume control...my line out is from my Blue Voodoo head (to which my guitar is hooked up to of course)

the line out then connects to a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter which then connects to my line in port on my sound card...
 
o ya and my input choices in sonar are:

Left Aureal audio
right aureal audio
stereo aureal audio

and all three dont work..
when i push record...the line starts moving across showing that it is recording..but when i push stop..nothing has recorded
 
Perhaps you could try the Windows Sound recorder in the start menu under accessories and see if you can record there. If not, there is an installation problem with XP, or under windows mixer there could be a problem with the input selection for recording. Also if there was an installation of software mixing control with your sound card, it may be conflicting with the windows recorder as in the Input selction for recording.
 
sound recorder is working fine..records fine and everything

If you could open Sonar and expand the track your are using for your guitar, and the press the Print screen button, then open MS paint and click paste, there will be a .bmp picture of your screen Save it and preferably change it to a .jpg file
Upload the picture here and we can see some of what your settings are.

Have you tried the troubleshooting section of the Help files?
 
yep..i have tried the troubleshooting and help files...

its weird..because, i was recording in Cubase VST with my mic in port fine like 3 months ago...that still works..but my line in doesn't work in cubase or sonar... (i dont care about cubase though..id rather use sonar)

with those settings you should be pegging the meters. You said the line in didnt work with Cubase or Sonar. If you did the setups correctly in each you should have audio unless. Perhaps your sound card's line converter is bad, or your drivers aren`t working, or they aren`t there. Have you run the wave profiler on your soundcard, selected the card for audio input monitoring, and use the mme drivers instead of wdm drivers in OPTIONS>audio ? If you`ve tried all that and still no joy I don`t really know what to tell you other than try another sound card.
 
Sorry, ddb, but I'm at a loss as well. As Toki suggested, try going to your Options > Audio menu and check the box to "use MME interface". See if that does anything.

Also, is there another mixer for your sound card. Some sound cards (e.g., SB Live) come with their own mixers. If so, launch that and make sure Line In is selected there as well.

I see you have ICQ and MSN messenger loaded in the systray. You really shouldn't be using any kind of app that makes use of your soundcard while running Sonar, especially if you are only working with one onboard soundcard.

Here's something I discovered while trying to record in Cubasis: The left input channels are ported to all the odd numbered channels and only those channels. The right input goes to the even channels. Now, I havent tried to mess around with this in Cakewalk, but if you're not recording your guitar to a stereo track, could it be that you're going to the "wrong" track(s) for the input you're using??? Only seems to happen in mono..... Just a thought....

Not the case with Sonar, Marcel. You can route any input to any track - mono or stereo.

That is the playback volume settings you have shown us there... as dachay2tnr (and others?) suggested, the recording controls need to be set.

Either you're showing us the wrong screen grab or you are confused as to where the recording level controls are.

Just in case it's the latter, from that screen you grabbed, select Properties from the Options menu, and from the dialog box that appears, select Recording from the section labeled "Adjust Volume for," then click OK. Then the recording controls are displayed and the title bar will say "Recording Control" rather than "Volume Control."
