...what do you usually need to do to them to make them fit the mix? Are there any general tricks that you usually have to do except for compression? Typical things to make them sit?
 
Lomas, not sure I understand your question, but I usually go thru a similar process when constructing a song/project. Depending on what are you trying to do, i.e., if this this is the first track in your project, lay down the other instrument lines, like bass, keyboards, strings, horns, (voice). Now listen to the drum line for quantization. If required, quantize all, or some, of the mix, being careful not to make to mechanical. Then I add the effects, like reverb, which I eventually tweak later on after each track is initially tweaked for effects.

If my recorded drums don't "fit the mix" awfully well just from bringing up the faders, I'd look at the drums, the drummer and the technique used to capture them.

If they're a "repair job" and you're trying to force them to fit, then it's totally dependent on what needs repair.
