What are the best values in Affordable analog mixers as far as Preamps and Eq's are concerned? How do old tascam, soundtracs and the like match up as front ends for DAW like pro tools? I see some great deals on old Tascam Mixers such as the 3500 and M-520, but wonder how they sound compared to other similarly priced boards....
Any opinions appreciated

I like old mixers.

Old Tascams have a lot of cool features that are relevant to old Tascam 8 tracks. I also think that they clip in a more appealing way than say a behringer. However, if you're going into protools, they may not be what you want.

Do you need phantom power or clean high gain?
How many ins and busses?
what kind of ins outs does your daw have?

maybe check out some used soundcraft boards. I think they're good clean boards for about $200 used. Make sure you check them out thoroughly before you buy them though.

follow up

i'm runnning pro tools LE through a digi 001
i'm planning on getting either a creamware a16 or better converters, and an analog board for mixing...i'm guessing either 24 or 32 channels, 8 buss....
i'm mainly concerned with getting the best sound in and our of pro tools from the boards pre's and EQ's....I'm reading so many different opinions on these mixers, i just wanna spend my money wisely....i find that most of the mixes i do in pro tools alone sound kinda weak, and the records i've done with my band have all been tracked in pro tools, then mixed through analog boards, with much better sounding results....this is what i want to achieve at home....

The reason you're seeing great deals on older Tascam boards is that they're not up to modern standards.

A Soundcraft Ghost would be a good choice, and you can find a gently used one on Ebay for $5000.

You could get by with a Tascam 3500, but it wouldn't money well spent or a good investment over the long haul...

which soundtracs?
I've got an old MX series, it took a lot of work, but I got it going again, nice and clean...
EQ"s alright- nothing to write home about though

Alesis Studio pro 32

They go for around $300 on eBay. I believe they were actually made by Mackie. Very solid and filled with everything you need and nothing you don't.

If you are interested in a Ghost, you should be able to find one for well under $5000. In fact, you should be able to get into a new one for that price. Used ones are running about $3000 and less. You could also get into a TAC Scorpion for under $2000, and maybe even a Trident Series 65 or similar for around $4000. For under $1000, the Tascam consoles are pretty decent desks.
