I'm just getting into sound recording and I'm starting with a new laptop, a Tascam US-800 audio interface, and Cuebase LE5 (that came with the interface). So far, I just using (inexpensive) headphones for monitoring during recording.
However, I've read several places that headphones, even good quality ones, really don't get it for mixing and mastering.
I'd appreciate some advise on what might be decent speaker setup for mixing and mastering at home. I don't have an external amplifier, so I'd need everything starting from the line out on my interface.
Powered monitors will be your best bet. There are many threads about this here. Use the search function to get others opinions about certain entry level monitors. Your best bet is to try some out in your recording environment and make your decision based both on reviews as well as your personal taste. Guitar Center is good for allowing you to do this. You do not mention anything about the room you are looking to use monitors in. Room acoustic treatment is just as necessary as the monitors you are placing in it. You will need to address this as well or just continue mixing with headphones. A few basic things: Front ported monitors are best in a small space where spacing monitors from a wall is not possible. 5" or smaller may be ideal for small spaces and low end response can be enhanced by adding a sub. Larger woofers can cause more low end problems in very small rooms. Most will say anything under $300 per pair new is a waste of money, though I suppose any monitor will help to translate your mixes better than headphones.
