is this pre worth looking into for a home studio?
i can get it around $180.
anyone out here that has used it or someone that has one..

This was the first mic pre I owned. When I was greener than the grass on the other side of the fence, I thought it was great. As I turned a little more brown (from BS and burnout!), I began to see its limitations (and hear its noise...a lot of noise).

I recently sold it and will never own another one. In that price range, I'd check out something by Presonus (Blue Tube should be about $149) and I've heard a lot of good things about the Midiman Audio Buddy (about $99).

I use the Presonus Digimax (8 channel pre) to record drums in my studio with great success.

Hope this helps, good luck.

In that price range the vtb-1 has the edge over all the others.

but i want a pre with a compressor to...
i didn't really want to buy a compressor... i know the studio projects pre is a good pre.. but i want a outboard compressor too.. maybe i'll be able to find a decent compressor on ebay or digibid and get a vtb1.. the mic is a tlm193...

i was gonna save and just get a Mindprint,Focusrite or a dbx

I think the ART stuff has it's place.

Not something I'd want on a lot of tracks, but it's a useful color to dash in from time to time.

The TMP1, by the way, is the bastard stepbrother to the VMP-2. They're somewhat different, and while the TMP is supposedly alright, it (supposedly) doesn't quite measure up to it's older sibling.

but is it better than the art?? i think so...i'm not sure though.. i only talked to one person with the art.. he likes it, but i've heard they have hiss problems

i wouldnt go with the art. try a vtb or pre sonus.
but thats just me!

Nice price on the fat man.

Wouldn't even go there on the Bellari -- at least not that model. :D

The Envoice is a great channel strip for the money.

fat man vs the en voice....

same price.. i've never delt with either...

which one is the better buy.. i can't go to a local store and model either one.. i don't know anyone that sells either item locally

Well, one's just a mic pre and compressor (fat man) and the other is a channel strip with mic pre / EQ / and compressor (mindprint).

Other than the fact that you're getting one more feature (eq) with the mindprint, I'm not sure how much better compression and mic preamplification you'd be getting with the fatman -- if any at all --depends on what you're looking for.

i just saw a review on the hhb and it wasn't to great.. its ok.. so i think i'll get the mindprint.. another steinberg product ;)

If you want an "all in one box" solution, try out the Focusrite Voicemaster... I love mine. It's a single preamp, optical compresser, de-esser, expander. Musician's Fiend (er... Friend...) carries them for around $450. If you're on a REAL tight budget, check out the Behringer clone (same number of knobs, same knob names) for $130 at MF.

i mentioned the voicemaster.. i was gonna get one from a studio i work at.. they use voicemasters, but they just updated to the new voicemaster pro. my budget won't let me get the voicemaster by next saturday, unless someone wants to sell me a used on around 330...i've delt with every behringer.. i don't think the one your talking about even comes close the the vocemasters quality.. the T1952 i think it is.. is actually a great pre.. i know someone that has one with a U87.. no its not a avalon.. but for 199 its real nice.. i was gonna get it along with the T1953 compressor/gate/limiter.. but i'ma get a overall better unit and i belive the Mindprint En-voice is a better unit.
