Ok, so ive done a lot of research on this message board and have come down to somewhat of a decision on my purchase. But every time i think im going to get something i start getting negative feedback on it, like "it sounds like crap" or "that will only give you problems." I am a very indecisive person so i figure i just have to make up my mind and get something. I am new to recording so i need to start learning somewhere.

I have a small studio area with a control room and a play room. its also my bands warehouse. I am going to be recording bands, mainly rock, alternative, emo, and punk. I want to be able to record 8 tracks at once.

My euqipment want list, that i am hopfully getting in the next week. (Budget- around 2000) some of this i need advice on what to get.

Fostex VM200 digital mixer
Sound card- i have been recomended the Terratec EWS88D but
i dont know if it can transfer 8 tracks at once to a computer.
looking to spend around 200 on a soundcard
Mics: akg-d112, (2)mxl-603s, studio projects b1, i have a sm57
studio projects vtb-1
some other studio parts stands, treatment, etc.

what i really need to know is where i can find a computer, and i was wondering if ebay is a good place and if there are any good ebay brands. tell me what you think of this. I also need some monitors, i was thinking an active pair around 500.

I know this is a lot of info, but any advice on anything will help. thanks a lot

p.s. how much does glass windows for the control room cost and where can i get some

Man you are a nut if you think you're going to get a decent 8 channel card for $200. That mixer has only 8 buss outs and ADAT outs. The smart thing to do would be get that mixer and an ADAT card. That way all the conversion and clock generation is done in the mixer and the card just handles the I/O from the mixer.

Here's an ADAT card.

alright, i think i understand. I am a begginer so let me get this straight. This card you recomended will make things a lot better and all i need is this card put into my computer and hook that mixer up to the card and i am set?

That card is a bit out of my budget. what about the WaveCenter/PCI adat card from frontier design. that sells for 329. more in my range.

What's your problem, jake-owa?

If the VM200 is a mixer with ADAT i/o and the EWS88D is a souncard with ADAT i/o on what basis do you claim that they wouldn't work together?

I've had my EWS88D for six months and I've used it to connect to my Fostex VF16 multitracker and I've never had any problems with this combination. In fact the EWS88D is just perfect for this because there's no unneccessary AD's or DA's to raise the price and there's 2 MIDI ins and outs, one for connecting to VM200 and the other for connecting to other midi equipment. I also bought a VM200 this week but I haven't had the time to hook it up to my computer but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work as well as the EWS88D/VF16 combo.

computer

you can get a real nice computer for about 700 bucks...

that's where i ordered mine, i got a deal. sometimes they have new sales that change weekly, keep your eyes open.

also, if you want an AMD (thats what i got) it'll be a bit cheaper too:

I picked up a Sony VAIO PC from www.ubid.com, and it hasn't let me down. If you're not going to build your own, or have an audio-type place construct one for you, you really have to understand what components you need (like whether the motherboard/chipset will cause any conflicts with the soundcard you intend to buy, how many PCI expansion slots you'll need, etc). Bottom line is you'll need to do your homework, but it can work.

BTW, I don't recommend buying monitors over the internet, due to the ridiculous cost of shipping. Staples routinely sells 19" monitors for cheap every couple of weeks. Just a thought...
