My church is wanting to start recording straight to computer. Current setup includes basic sound system with Peavey 16 channel mixing board. I think we will probably have to get a new mixer (this one does not have individual outs). What is the best and least expensive setup to record to computer. I need something that will allow a minimum of 12 inputs.

Warning, Aardvark fan....

2 aardvark Q10's....16 channels of preamps, no mixer needed....of course, you will need a decent computer to pull off that kind of recording.....

im assumin you need to record each channel to its own track?...you will be recording all instruments at once?....

Hey Tcobb,
Don't buy that mixer quite yet! Does the Peavy have inserts or FX send/returns on each channel? You can patch into those for recording, and this is sometimes a better approach, as you get the signal pre-fader.

answers to questions

I need to be able to record all singers and instruments at once each on a separate track. We have five sometimes six singers and keyboard (Piano), keyboard (Organ), sax, guitar, drums, and sometimes bass. I've been running the sound board for about two years and everything I know I've learned on my own (which isn't a whole lot). We have a Peavy mixer with 16 ins but no individual outs. It has EFX controls for A & B monitors for each channel, but only has one output for the entire board. The budget is slim and this maybe more than we can handle.

tcobb,
I checked the manual on Peavey.com for your mixer. It is very limited. In order for you to accomplish your goal of capturing each single source during a live performance (I'm assuming this would be during church?) you'd need a better mixer that has at the very least an insert on each channel. Mackie seems to get the nod around here for "bang for buck" mixers.
