Advice for a Pre-amp

Hi.. im looking for a good Pre Amp. so far i have just seen and like the MIC2200 PREAMP. MIC. BEHRINGER... what difference has with the Ultragail Mic200?... what other brands are good? i mean some other but for the same price, and no more than two inputs.

i fancy my presonus tubepre too, but not because its "tube" and "warms up my sound".. because it was cheap and works quite effectively.

The difference is the ultragain is only 1 channel, while the MIC2200 is dual channel. My advice is to stay away from "tube" at this price range. The designers use the bare minimum circuit (starved plate) to add a tube in the signal path so their sales department can add the words "tube warmth" in the product description. Proper tube circuitry requires more expensive components and therefore good tube pre's cost more. Better to concentrate the money on a solid state pre as an entry level preamp. You'd be hard pressed to find a bad comment about the M-Audio DMP3

I'll add my vote for the DMP3. Also the Symetrix SX202, if you find one at a good price. I love that pre.

There was a thread recently about the so-called Behri toob pres. The tube is just for display - there is a series of 3 LEDs right behind the tube that light up in order to simulate tube glow.

the presonus also has a light behind the tube. i just laughed when i turned it on and went "oooooooooh". oh well, it was a big step up from my stageworks mixer that i had at the time!

Symetrix SX202 is a nice 2 channel clean pre. No longer in production so you would have to look on E-bay. The SX302 is the current model and is also decent. Get the SX202 if you have a choice. Both should be about $150 or so used.

The MIC2200 is actually a very acceptable piece of kit ... I was skeptical and HR.com member Wilkee posted me one free of charge to convince me otherwise!!!!

I wouldn't bother with the MIC200 though ... too much voicing gimmickery going on there for such a cheap thing.

The M-Audio Tampa and the Joemeek ThreeQ are two more options for differently-accessorised preamp channels you should consider - Tampa has more flexible comp and some digital outputs, ThreeQ has the Meek sound in the comp and a very nice EQ. Depends what you're after!!

I was thinkin maybe the Tampa too but thought it might be more $$$ than he wanted to part with. I dig my Tampas...clean pres and very good comps...and I also thought of the ART Pro Channel. I heard that if you change the tube that runs the pre to a shuguang (forget the #) that it's even sweeter...

I have a TubePre by presonus and feels it's great for the money. I'm gtting a DMP3 next week. I'll go to higher end as I gain more experience. Here's an example of my latest work using Logic 6, Presonus Firebox and TubePre. I used the TubePre on acoustic guitars and as a DI for Bass. New track using Presonus Firebox and Tubepre

And what about AudioBuddy from M-audio?

Some guy told me that even the AudioBuddy was better than de Mic2200... is this true??

To be honest, at this price point, they aren't going to be a mile apart ... but I wouldn't take the Audiobuddy over the MIC2200. One factor with it is that it doesn't seem to provide a full 48v of phantom power ... which lowers your headroom as your mics aren't fully powered.

The Audiobuddy is a definite step down from the DMP-3.
