Adjusting Dolby On Fostex Xr-7

My Fostex XR-7 has Dolby as do many other multi-track cassette recorders. Here's the problem...it's useless! When I engage it, it squashes the signal too much and almost sounds like I have an improperly set gate at times. (I'm using TDK SA60 cassettes, by the way). Is there some way to reduce or adjust the noise reduction? If it were maybe half of what it is now, it would be fantastic....just enough to take out the hiss while leaving the signal in tact. Thanks gang.

If your dealing with an older deck that may have worn heads and a reduced high frequency response as a result of the head wear, that would probably explain why the Dolby is killing what's left of your highs.

As to the gating action, that's a weird one and I have never heard of Dolby NR doing that? Are you sure we are talking about Dolby and not dbx???

As for adjusting anything; About all you could do is a proper calibration of the deck following it's service manual procedures to the letter and that could help bring things back to spec, minus the head wear.

Cheers! :)
