How do you add those delay trails to vocal tracks to where it sounds like a yell could go on forever as it fades out? I've messed with the effects and I'll ive been able to get is either repetition of a whole word over and over again (with longer delay times) and with shorter delay times I get a weird robotic, reverb effect. I've also tried using reverb for this but then it just sounds like the singer is in a cave. I'm stumped.

The "feedback" parameter is what you want to experiment with. That's what controls the duration of the decay. Also, you'll want to experiment with when your bringing the effect in. Try fading the delay in gradually as you near the end of the vocal.

curious

is the fade supposed to make the delay sound smoother? if so i'll have to keep that in my notes for versatility.

im useing cakewalk sonar with many different plugins.
ill try the feed back idea.
thanks for the help.

i know maynard does all kinds of studio trickery with his endless screams..it seems like they keep getting longer on each album :)
check out the one on "the grudge" - lateralus

Sounds like you're looking for a natural analog sounding delay. The trick is to reduce more and more of the highs with each subsequent echo. This is what happens with real echoes as well, because the highs tend to get absorbed more quickly by the air and surroundings than the lows.

If one of your delay plugins has an EQ feature, turn it on. Choose a low pass filter set anywhere from about 3kHz to 7kHz, depending on the sound you want. Then you can turn up the feedback and produce more echoes, but they won't just sound like repeats. That should work for you.

Ohhh, tool... [whipes drool from chin]

Was litening to Lateralus on the way into work, and In know that scream you're referring to at the end of "the grudge" (track 1 if memory serves me)... I haven't listened to it with a critical ear, but it never sounded artificial to me (I usually pick those things pretty easily)... I think he's just got a hell of a set of wind pipes ;)

Simple delay and long decay times with multiple delays should work if you want a software solution (that's cheaper for me in most cases :p ).

i agree with you pinky........i know how maynard screams for as long as he does...........my friend can scream for longer than 30 seconds....and i can scream for about 30 seconds........i wouldn't say that either of us sound like maynard though.....we can just scream for a long time.

I've played a single note on a trumpet for nearly two minutes... does that win me anything? :D

is it a multi-tap delay followed by a reverb in the fx chain?

A job offer from a synagogue for next year's High Holy Days?

haaaahaahaahahahahaha

that was damn funny!

not many job opps for knocking down the walls of jericho.

jericho

and the walls came tumbling down....

yes but i believe those without trumpets were supposed to yell as well...i doubt they could yell for 2 minutes..and maynard wouldn't be in that crowd, either :).

So you think he's really doing that? I always thought no way...a scream is pretty random and easy the fade together...I could hold a single note for a while but I don't know about screaming cause you're pushing out much more air.....something to ponder...

either way they do alot more snazzy vocal polishing and effects in the new album (lateralus) as well as the old familiar reverse reverb on the song with the Korg wave drum and that cool middle eastern sounding instrument (help me out here guys :)

....mmmmmmmmmmMommy.......

i might be missing something here..but people normally don't chain their effects? They might chain compressors and EQ, but not effects unless you are going for a special effect like a chorused delay or something.

I've got a cool technigue--

1. Record your vocal.

2. Split the last word or words that you want to echo out onto a seperate track from the original vocal.

3. Apply a delay plug-in to the echo vocal track and go wild.

The main vocal will be untouched by the echo processing while the delayed line goes on and on. It's cool to try this on words and even syllables throughout your vocal. You can do all sorts of crazy stuff to the delayed signal ie eq, distortion, panning, without affecting your original vocal.

ps I hope this hasn't already been mentioned. I'm too lazy to read all the posts.
