(A) Why would you want to?

(B) It's in the manual of whatever you're using. Different programs have different ways of dealing with rendering a track in place.

(A2) Unless we're talking about a hardware unit that you want to free up - Just run it out to another track.

i've looked through the manual/help and can't seem to find out how.
why wouldn't i want to do it?

the compressor is an RNC1773, the software is Cool Edit Pro 2.0. wouldn't this be a common scenario (adding external effects to a dry recorded track)? until now i've only ever used the cool edit effects. theres got to be a simple way to do this.

Track out and back in on another track - Just like recording anything else.
