why is it telling me that i need to make 5 posts before i can add a picture to a thread?

Because that's the rule around here. The website administrators have created a 5 post minimum rule to help prevent the use of auto-posting software. It stops spammers from coming in and dropping spam ads (pictures) on the first post.
Once you show that you are a genuinely interested in participating in the group discussions, you will gain more privileges. Come on in and chat for a while.
