Add a phantom source, or just scrap Tascam US-224?

I'd like to get the opinion of some of you here...
I have a laptop and a Tascam US-224 (for portability sake) and it records alright, but seems a little noisy to me. I've got some phantom mikes now that I'd like to use, and of course, this Tascam has no phantom power. What to do?
Should I try to piece in a phantom source somewhere in line, or scrap the US-224 altogether and get a different recording device?
Any suggestions will be very welcome...new devices would have to be USB or Firewire, I guess, because I'd like to use w/ the laptop. Thanks again,
Jed

The mic pre's in the Tascam unit are noisy.

You may want to get something like the Studio Projects VTB-1 to use as a dedicated mic pre instead, and it has full 48v phantom power. See www.studioprojectsusa.com for more details on that one. If you do a search, you'll find other options discussed, like the M-Audio DMP3 also.
