adat xt to adat blackface

I have a black face old adat and a friend of mine has 2 adat xt's. He lent me one so we could work on a project together. Because of the playing 16-20bit/compatibility issue with the 2 machines, I'm not sure which one I should do my initial recordings on as the master unit. Can anyone enlighten me?

Not sure, but it seems the tapes would be compatible between machines.
If that's the case I would presume perhaps continue the new tracking on the higher bit depth machine. At playback, which tracks get that machine..?

But what about the 16 versus 20 bit thing? I'm confused about this..

..I'm betting 20' bit in the 16 bit machine just doesn't play the lower 4 bits. Not a huge penalty sound wise there (certainly notduring tracking monitoring'.) Perhaps a consideration at mix down.
