If someone were to have enough money to choose to go with an ADAT based recording system, or a Hard Disk based system, which would be a better path. And if there isn't a better path one way or the other, then what are the pros and cons of each. I know this is a lot to answer, but I'd be most greatful.

Thanx, Blake M.

Adats are everywhere. You can easily record something, send it to Delaware so Uncle Joe can put down a solo, then drive it to LA to mix it at JOHNS BITCHIN STUDIO.

But they are still tape. You have to rewind. They can break or get eaten.

Adats are also modular. Need 8 more tracks? Just drop 1500-2000 and ya got it.

Hard Disk can crash. But you don't have to rewind.

Face it man, ya just can't win.

Yo Zero to Sixty and Beyond:

When you are considering a recording system, think of the "bits." Adat has 20 or 24 plus bits which equates to some nice sounds.

I'm not sure, but I don't think the bit mark is above 32 to this date; this equipment costs mucho dinero but will give you great sounds.

You need to get demos from each type of major recording equipment and then let your wallet and ears decide what's for you.

Keep your radar detector on.

When you are talking about the latest Digital Multitrackers, they all do record on 24 bits, 48/96khz nowadays. With ADATS, you still have the problem about heads, alignment, number of hours etc. etc. BUT, and that is a big BUT (ha ha), S-VHS tapes are cheaper and a little (not a lot) more convenient that having to swap hard disk, except fostex system of swappable hard disks make swapping easier. The prices of hard disks are coming down in price.

I once stumbled on a forum for ADATS, except I couldn't remember the address now. They were mostly talking about the problems and work-around. They had advised to get the TASCAM, not ADAT. - I got the hard disk version.
