Not sure if I should address this to the "Alesis" forum or here, but here goes....
I am ready to buy an Alesis ADAT recorder and my question is this: am I able, through the AlesisEdit, to mix down to my PC harddrive, and then burn a CD from there? I hate to buy a separate DAT machine to master down to if I can successfully go right to my PC and then burn an audio CD from there.
BTW- this site is sooooo great, it has helped me immensely in choosing gear!!

I have an adat with a alesis pcr card and I
have no problems dropping down into my com-
puter and mixing there and then burning. I
have a plextor 8/4/32 burner and have been
using adapt ec cd creator? software. Have one
problem with that that noone has answered yet. Have to drop all the songs I want to cd
at once, I have not been able to drop just one then come back and do another. Am looking
for updated software for that may take care
of that problem. Sonusman bought the pcr card
and couldn't get it to work for some reason.
I did have trouble with my old (not so old)
computer. It had an onboard sound chip (not a
sound card)on the mother board and I couldn't
use the chip and the pcr card at the same time. Had to go to device manager and disable
one or the other to use one. They were both
sharing the same IRQ and until I disabled the
sound chip and replaced it with a cheap sound
card I had that problem. Hope this is of some
help. I love my adat by the way.

Thanks for the reply, dragonworks.......I am planning to get a new computer as well (this one is getting OLD) as an ADAT recorder and setup, so I will make sure it has the newest CD burner and software. Although the new Alesis Masterlink looks like a nice piece of gear, I would just as soon not put out the extra $1400 if I can successfully master down to the PC.....it doesn't help that I am pretty computer illiterate! My Boss ME-30 pedal is as complicated as I can comprehend!

Sonusman moderates the alesis forum and
is much more up on this stuff than I. I don't
know why he couldn't get his card to work. I
don't know what the alesis piece of equipment
is that you mentioned but the pcr card cost
me about 275. By the way, i bought my new
computer at a trade fair and saved alot of
money. I got a 10 gid hd 7200rmp,128mb ramx
133. a 133bus speed motherboard, 17 inch .25
dot pitch monitor, plextor 8/4/32 cd burner,
speakers,epsom 660 printer,50x cd rom. Cost
me $1300.00 total. I looked at all the pc
magazines and called all so called discount
places etc and the closest I could get this
set up for was over 2000. The only thing
about buying at a trade show is you got to
be careful that who you by from you will be
able to get a hold of if anything doesn't work correctly. Mine all worked smooth!
The software that comes with the adat edit
pcr card is pretty cheesy and you would probably want to get something better if you
go that route. You should really try to get
a hold of sonusman and try to get his advice
first. JUST DONT CROSS HIM!!!

While waiting to get the money for one of the higher end ADAT digital cards, I've actually been using a high-quality cable to come from my mixer into the LINE IN on a Turtle Beach card. I mix down to that just the same as I would mix down to a tape deck or DAT. I've been pretty pleased with the results. I tend to mix down to two channels on the ADAT stack first, so I don't have to keep mixing over and over and over ...

I do some final work on the PC with CoolEdit and then burn the CD. It's been good enough for demos and checkpoints. Right now, my engineering mistakes are more glaring than any losses going D/A and A/D ...

Thanks again for the info, dragonworks and Bill.......it has helped.
I think I may try to contact sonusman as you suggest- I am not real comfortable with all this computer stuff, I am wondering if I might be saving myself alot of grief by just saving up for an Alesis Masterlink.....I'll run it by Ed. Thanks again!
