Purge

Traitorous Usurper
I need to know what I should be looking for and what I should be avoiding here. The prices on these things fluctuate drastically, so what's the catch? Some of them go on Ebay for like 10 bucks (either the 1/4" or XLR types) and some are around $150. I understand the virtue of buying quality cables, but $150? WTF?

Purge,

Are you the guy I sold the 2 used ADATs to? If so, here is a brief rundown of your cabling options. If not, part of it is useful for you and the other part is just educational, I guess.

The Alesis blackface ADAT has 2 types of inputs and outputs: balanced via the Elco connectors (the rectangular connectors), and unbalanced via the 1/4" jacks. The Elco connection is the one that will be the expensive option since those connectors are a real pain in the butt to build. A new Elco cable assembly will cost you around $150 (ballpark). The unbalanced cable option using the 1/4" jacks is what I used. You can pick up 8-channel 1/4" TS snakes for $20-50 (depending on brand; Musicians Friend has Jade brand cables starting at $12 it looks like [http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/339060/]; I went with Hosa cables since I could buy those locally. I don't know anything about Jade but it seems kinda cheap to me).

The Fostex unit uses different connectors. The balanced inputs and outputs are on 25-pin D-sub connectors. You can pick up these for about the same price as the 1/4" snakes mentioned above (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/330132/). I found that Full Compass had the best prices on these ($35 for a 10 ft snake). The unbalanced outputs on the Fostex use phono connections and can be had for $20-30.

I hope this helps.

Purge this is the wrong place, but I have some old ADAT Elco to XLR and ADTA Elco to 1/4" Snakes. If you are interested. Excellent condition. Was part of an install till I sold all my ADAT's

Hit me if interested.

The diff is this, if you use the jacks on the back of the units you are at -10, if you use the Elco you are at +4 (so far as the operating level)

So think Prosumer -10
Professional +4

One l;ast edit... These are the 5 meter Ones. about 15-17' long I think. Might be longer not sure about the math conversion

Very cool, thank you both. Giles, all of my rack gear is -10 crappy consumer stuff, but I might still be interested in one of those 1/4" snakes. I will let you know very soon.
