This is for you people who have ADAT machines...

Thinking about getting one instead of a DA88, i need to know from the USERS (not a magazine review) how good or bad ADAT really is

Been using 4 XT20s since 1999 -- excellent machines.... of course, you need to maintain them like you would ANY tape-based machine......

(Digital or analog -- all tapes shed!)

Had three since '99 and bought the first two in about '95. Never any problems that changing the idler wheel or cleaning couldn't fix. Extremely stable and reliable. Intuitive. Easy to sync to PC through many different methods. Lightpipe transfers still amaze me.

For the past two years or so, since we began mixing fully on PC, we've been using the ADATs simply as converters and to back up data in the event of computer glitch/failure, but they were absolute workhorses before that.

No complaints.

I've been running a pair of type II 20 bit units and a BRC for a few years with no problems out of the machines themselves. They're now both part of a portable rig since I've picked up a HD24 for the studio. As Bruce pointed out, like anything tape based, they require maintainence but if you're good to them, they'll be good to you.

Ok, here is a totally uneducated opinion.....

The local Pro Studio... (fairly Pro.... Dylan, Lightfoot, U2 and more recorded there) swears by the Tascam units....

I was asking him about Adats, and he just turned his nose up :D

But, Alanis Morrisettes album "Jagged little pill" was recorded on on old Blackface adats.... One of the BIGGEST selling pop albums of that decade and, it sounds great....

I'm a Pro Tools bitch now, but at one time I was an Adat Slave, and loved the 3 I had...

(too bad, you can't edit on them, or I would still have 'em)

Anyways, theres my .02 on a subject, I really don't know much about.. ;)
