I am trying to compile experiences ADAT PCI users had with installing their cards and getting them to work properly. This is sort of important, and you will know why shortly.

I need:

What kind of system you have. Particularly, hard drive specs, motherboard, etc.....

What problems, if any, you had with getting the card to work right on your system. Also, what was done to fix it.

Any upgrades you may have had to do to get the card to function properly.

Any comments the tech support people made about upgrades.

Whether your card shipped with the Connect ver. 1.02 software, or the ver. 1.0 software, and if you got the card to work with the ver 1.0 software, or if you had to install the ver. 1.02 before it would work properly.

How long you waited on hold for tech support.

If you are not using the Connect software and going to and from the hard drive and ADAT's, I don't need your info, just users that are using the card to go to and from ADAT machines. Using the Connect software is important here. If you are using other software, then I don't need this info.

Your name and City/State. This info would be used in publication, so if you want to remain anonamous, please say so!

You don't even need to supply a name, just the info, but names would be helpful.

Please email info directly to me. ed_rei@echostarstudio.com

Thank you.

Ed

Hello !
I have 3 XT-ADAT's, witch I'm using together with mu pc.

:What kind of system you have. Particularly, hard drive :specs, motherboard, etc.....

I'm useing Tawain motherboard 466 mHz ADM processor.
I have 2 Soundcards together with the ADAT card, AWE64 gold and Soundblaster-1024. I's working ok, but I have to remember to change the input and output for multimedia, when I'm going to use etc, ADAT or Soundblaster.
There is a problem due instalation, since you have to correct the IRQ's later if you like to have multipple soundcards working together.

Jepp, I have upgrade to ver 1.02, no problems

Jepp, I'm using Connect software, I think It's to unacurate.
I have tried to get it direct into Cakewalk 9.0, but got problems with another drivers, so long that I was dependent
of synk from the XT's.

Ed, I tried to use it with an AMD K-6 II, 400MHz, via chip set, 256 Megs of RAM and couldn't get it to work. Alesis tech support said there was a compatibility problem and I should get my money back, so I did.

I'm using the same AMD K-6 II, 450 mHz and Via chipset, and 256M ram. No problems so far...Maybe it's another mainboard...
What kind of problems appered ? The only problem I know is when I'm using Cakewalk pro 9.01 and try to import tracks from my XT-ADAT trought Adat Edits input adress, I'l get
out of tune after playing a while. Maybe that the hardisk is't not so fast as it should be. Using SCSI with around 8Mb/sec. Should be fast enoch.

I have used the both versions of the connect software with no major problems, just some minor inconsistancies. I have installed the card on 4 different computers: 1st was over a year ago in 2 Emachines with only 32 meg and a celeron 333mhz processor in one (and an AMD 350 in the other) running win98 1st release. 2nd was in a homebuilt computer with an Amd 350mz processor with 128k ram running win 98 second edition and a 13gigWD ata 66 hdrive. Then, in an old pentium 133 with 40 megs of edo ram running win98 second edition with a 17gig Western Digital hard drive but using an ata 66 card adapter. Once I set the hard drive to enable DMA "on", I could transfer 8 tracks at once on any of the computers. The Emachines were with stock harddrives of 3gig and 4 gig.
I have used a tomato MB and a PC100 MB among others. DO you need any more specifics?
Jim K.

Replied in email but wanted to post here.

On old homebuilt Pentium 233 MMX w/96 Mb memory, card works fine.

I'll be posting a thread trying to find out how to edit 20-bit 48kHz files, though ...

Jerry Dragun Copake, NY, Started out with a compaq pressario
233mgz 64 ram k6, card would not work, contacted support,
15 minutes on average, was told card would not work with amd k6-1(?), upgraded to amd k6-3 dont know the chipset 333mhz 64ram, card worked but is not full duplex(?)and could not change irq which was shared with the onboard soundchip, took soundchip out of hardware config and added an ensoniq sound card and that fixed that problem. Bought new computer at trade show and had it made up on spot, amd k7 athalon 650mhz, 128ram, 7200rpm HD forgot chipset and manufacturer of HD, added card to system, no problems. I found alesis support to be most helpful if you can stand the wait. Card would never work with 1.0 software had to download upgrade from alesis site to get it to work. Card was shipped with 1.0, Jan, 1999(?) At least alesis has a toll free number for support and thats more than I can say
for most of the software manufactures I have come across.
P.S. I was pretty pissed off when I found I couldnt monitor tracks while recording directily into the pc. I havent had
my equipment all set up in over a year and dont know if I
can do it now with the system I have, but I have downloaded
tracks into the new computer and worked on them. I have never uploaded back to the adat so dont know how that would
fly? And thanks Ed for all the help I have received from you in the past, glad I could be of some service.

I believe sonusman is correct about the monitoring. The fact that you lose that capability should have been brought up in the alesis manual. Of course you lose the ability to monitor digitally when using the BRC to transfer tracks also. The easy solution is to monitor via the analog outs. The expensive solution is a digital patchbay that splits the signal. The most simplest of mixers (even passive) can be used to monitor from the adats, but going back into the Adats from the computer can be frustrating when the adats don't lock to the computer correctly. All in all, the monitoring is a kludge! I believe that the Adats Digital I/O were not originally intended for the purpose that they are being used for today. A whole industry is built around that interface.
My 2 cents.
