adapter for recording

yes you can, but it'll sound like shit...

1. this is a stereo jack->minijack adapter. your guitar only sends a mono signal.

2. when recording your guitar direct you should always use some kind of mic-preamp to get the proper sound. your soundcards input is mostly used for recording line-in signals...

I'd reccomend getting a usb audio-interface with built in preamp. M-Audio makes some good one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

does your amp have a line out?....do you have an amp? :)

my amp is pretty cheap. it just has a slot that says "input" and another one that says "phones". i cant afford a new suondcard, so am i just better off getting that adapter for $6?

actually that adapter wont even work... ive tried using it before just cuz i had one laying around, and it doesnt pick up anything.

Maybe you could turn it up a shitload once you record it, but like he said -- it will sound like shit.

Why dont you just mic the amp?

when you say "guitar rig," what do you mean?

if its some sort of software, you could still use em if you mic'd it, no?

Well most computers can't recognize specifics. It doesn't know that a guitar is plugged in. You could probably plug in a synth and it'd recognize it, as well as a mic, that just happens to be micing your guitar cab. A signal's a signal.

yeah, thats what i was thinking too, but i had no idea what "guitar rig" was...

but yeah dude, just give micing it a try and see what happens. you got nothin to lose

I think guitar-rig actually supports connecting your guitar directly to the line in on your soundcard, at least it did so on my mac. However when laying on the coolest distortion effects it's going to be really noisy.
