I just would like to understand better..

What gives a recorder the ability to record 24bit / 96Khz? Is it the A/D converter in the equipment?

What makes the recording a quality recording? Is it the quality of the mic and the pre-amps for the mic?

Why a Sony PCM-D1 is better, and costlier, than a Sony PCM-D50 or PCM-M10, aside from build quality?

1. Yes, the A/D converter
2. The mic, the preamps, yea, those things matter, sure. Also the converters (arguably becoming less of an issue all the time, also arguably still an issue, though). More importantly is the source, the performance, and the ability of the guy positioning the microphone to use it correctly on the source.
3. No idea wtf that stuff is, sorry! (maybe somebody else will, though)

edit: I just hit 1,000 posts... I thought it would be more exciting. No strippers or anything... now I want to delete one and try again.
