I was generalizing with the phrase "certain material" to mean "in general, they too easily forgive sonic problems in the mix".

My experience with them is such that critical details in the mids and upper-mids was not as obvious, and they didn't let me hear a flaw in a mix balance or portion of the sonic spectrum, leading to a less than ideal mix.

Here are 2 samples -- one mixed to what I thought sounded correct via the Event PS6s, the other mixed to what I thought sounded correct via the KRK V8s.... note also that I revisited this mix BECAUSE I didn't like the way the PS6 mix sounded when I played it back over the V8s, so in my case - the V8s let me hear more details, allowing me a better defined, more tightly-focused mix.

(Remember, these are MY experiences.... YMMV!!)

thanks for the two mixes, it's nice to actually hear the difference a monitor makes.

Being a newbie, the things I notice are :
(listened to on 5$ pc speakers)

- The PS6 version sounds a bit duller in the higher freqs, which is not bad or good, it's just different. Acrtually going back and forth between the two versions makes the V8 version sound a bit more aggressive in the high end, but again, that's personal.

- in the last section you can actually hear the doubled brass (L/R) in the V8 version (timing difference) as opposed to the PS6 where they seem more as being played only once.

- the drums sound livelier to me on the krk's (i hear more room) and crispier, which might have to do with my first remark.

Again, thanks for the A/B example!

Herwig

The Mackie's are good monitors, but when I compared them to the KRK V8s, my ears preferred the V8s.......

Monitor selection IS pretty subjective, so take any reviews with a grain of salt -- what's matters most is how they sound to YOUR ears!

Did Steve's have the Mackies and V8s in stock for you to do a direct comparison?

...Mike.

They do now........ they didn't back then.... I was in Montreal when I did an extensive monitor comparison......

So if I go into Steve's today will they have a good selection???(the one in Ottawa) Hope so I plan on leaving with something tonight dammit...lol

I actually was lookin at some sweet JBL'S aswell...JBL LSR 25p was lookin nice...But its the sound that counts...

I was there yesterday - I saw they had V8s in there.... they had a whack of them there for comparisons... Mackie, Event, Tannoys.... not sure about the JBL 25s.....

Talk to Fred and tell him Bruce sent ya -- he's working till 9:00pm tonight.... (Fred's got engineering chops and isn't one of those salesguys that will try to steer you the wrong way... he really knows his stuff...!)

I rented a DAT machine from Fred the other week. He was very helpful and straightforward. I find the other Steve's staff a bit hard to get along with but he was very helpful.

Now another question is....What are some good Studio and Live show monitors...I Figuired I would be able to use the aboved mentioned for both studio recording and mixing and my live show....

I really HOPE you aren't planning on taking your studio near-fields and using them in live shows for floor wedges or side fills!!!

Alas, poor KRK, I knew them well! :(

FWIW, I had the exact same issues Bruce had with the events. I used the PS5s for a while, learned them inside and out but every other mix would surprise me when listening on other systems. Particularly the top end and upper mids would not be as clear and detailed as they were on the events. The midrange on complex mixes became difficult to place. It was either to discreet or too cluttered or too bright or not bright enough. I actually bought the events initially bec they had great midrange detail but that turned out to be their fatal flaw for me. Basically, on event monitors (they all have this issue, including the 20/20bas) the midrange will rarely sound cluttered. Everything will sound like it has its own space when in fact it does not. Forgiving is exactly the word I would use.
Significantly contributing to all this is exaggerated imaging. If you pan a track slowly from center to right (or left) you will notice that you dont really hear it moving until you it the 40% panned mark, 50% panned sounds like 60% and then 70% and up sound like its fully panned. Like a 5% dif instead of a 30% dif.

Radio shack speakers with Goat Felchers EQ mod done to them....

HR624's

Couldn't get the bad boy 824's but the sixes are sounding real nice.

I was gonna ask what people thought of the mackie 624s...

So?

HR624's

I'm likeing them. I'm pretty surprised at the bottom end and they seem fairly accurate. When I check out mixes elsewhere...it sounds like it does here. That's what I've been looking for. They're a bit pricey but the boxes are making me happy so it's worth it.

what do you guys think about behringer b2031 thruth monitors or Yamaha MSP5??

I can't decide wich one to buy in this price range!!!

Please help!!!

I can't comment on the Behrringers, but I owned a pair of MSP5's for quite a while. They were OK for the price, but certainly not a pro quality monitor.
They are definitely on the crispy side, and there is a strange quirk that I quickly learned to hate:
They are front ported, and everytime they hit a stong bass note, they shoot a blast of air straight at you. Talk about dry eyeballs! It's like taking a 3 hour glaucoma test everytime you mix.

Or mabye Chinese water torture.

Thanks Aaron!!

Any comment on behringer thruth monitor??

What is the best monitor in $500 price range(pair)??

Blue Bear,

Sorry to bug you, but is there any chance you can make these two mixes available again (I tried to d/l them but got a FILE NOT FOUND sort of error)? I would love to hear the difference myself between the same material mixed by the same person on two different monitors.

Thanks and have a great weekend,
Jeff in Houston
