My dad sent me an acoustic and I made this tune for him.. I played it over the phone and he got teary eyed.. (mission accomplished) :D

I'd appreciate any ears on the sound before I send him the final mix..

I only want to know if anything jumps out or is harsh.. My father barely knows how to use a stereo and I have no idea how his e.q. is set.. he's 71.. is it too much for him?

It has acoustic, keys, electric guit, EBow, and a Whammy pedal..

I didn't record any midi.. all the keys were done as audio right out of the keyboard..

thanks!

happy fathers day to the fathers out there! :D

Damn Sam, better than most of your tunes that I've heard and that's saying something. The acoustic sounds cool. It also sounds like on board pickup (or at least some of one). I prefer miked acoustic but that's a matter of taste. The e-bow thing is VERY well played but there's something about the ambience of the sound. It seems too immediate, not in the same reverberant space as the rest of the instruments. The strings and orchestra instruments are OUTSTANDING. Mix levels all sound good to me. This is EXTREMLY good.

very nice......did you double track the acoustics or use delay....what ever you did there, I like it...........i do think the acoustics sound a little to d.i. on the stummy parts, but for what you are going for, it's not too distracting or anything....there's plenty of other cool stuff going on so you don't dwell on it at all.........i love the synth parts.........it sounds pretty great the way it is e.q. wise......i don't know much about e.q. unless something sounds wrong or too muddy.....everything here sounds good.....your dad should love it

.......wow man.... .....wow

This may be on of the best instrumentals ive heard from you man. Excellent! Nice choice of sounds in this. .....especially that flute. ......really excellent.
I can see that this is intended to be an instrumental, but I could totally hear vocals over the first part of this tune. .....Very strong hook there melodically. ....very strong writing.
The acoustic is a nice, very complimenting addition to your chosen arsenal of synth sounds. Im looking forward to hearing more of that. Nice piano too btw.
I like this kind of "heavy" from you man:) .

g w/ a big fathers day 5
Great stuff Sam!!!!!

Pretty damned nice. I'm not even gonna' bitch about the DI'd acoustic, b/c you forget all about it after the intro.

Listended maybe 10 times. I think it's about perfect for what it's intended to be.

I Like it! It all comes together well and has a nice overall sound. Only flaw was I was expecting some touching lyrics.

Happy fathers day
Bill

Nice tune man.. I like the pan-flute-ish stuff throughout, and the piccato strings at 2:50.. I also wasn't too hip on the DI'ed acoustic, but once everything comes in, you don't really notice it.

Very relaxing, New-Age type stuff.

Dammnit, now even Robert Deniro is crying, look what you did.

Has a real nice sound, well written well orchestrated. Your diversity is impressive. Uhm.. but you can't be having this like nice relationship with your family all publicly. When i listen to your heavy stuff i dont wanna imagine like hugs and stuff, i wanna hear like dysfunctional and all that. Great job.

Cool melody man.I like the breakdown with the strings and piano at 2:18.The acoustic sounds pretty good DI'd.I really liked this sam.It almost made the old man choke up eh?LOL.Good deal.;)

Obviously my musical tastes favor this style that you do. Dont get me wrong though... your other stuff is cool as hell!

sounds like a roland orchestra... Ive been looking at the 5050 without the sampling..... i have to quite this gear lust! :)

excellent work here!

pretty neat tune. I will say, if I used that shakuri sound...or whatever... I KNOW you would have jumped my ass for using that sound!!!:D I actually think it is a pretty cool flute sound, but the vibrato is what really gives it away to this Roland addict here. Fits your song perfect, I would say however. The mellower flute is ok...but kinda unintersting sounding. The ebow is cool.. sounds backwards. I like the acoustic sound. I am not one for having to be a purist and mic this and that. The acoustic sound is good on its own. Who says it has to sound like an acoustic? Shoot...all the pno. sounds everyone uses don't sound like 9 footers, but no one complains about the elec pno sounds you here around here. And all the mic'd pno sounds always sound hissy or kinda lame anyway. The picked glockenspeil stuff (along with the orchestral stuff) sounds a little out of place and I would have picked another patch.. something more far-eastern sounding maybe.

The song is very beautiful and played nice. Nothing to extreme, but very relaxing to listen to. I might suggest you try some 'unused' patches for some of the melody lines to 'take it out there' a little bit. Your father should be proud. And...you're even luckier to be able to share it with him. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that. What you're doing now with your music and sharing it with him is the most anyone could ever ask ANY musician. This puts you on the top of my Christmas card list, dude!!

oh yeah...you asked about the mix. For your 71 yr old Dad...it's puuurrfect. The drums don't knock you out of your seat and it is contemporary enuff to say :...hey... I am still a dude rocker!" Are you using the Roland reverb too? sounds good to me.

Your dad will love it just as it is. Again, its that cinematic thing you have going. This is a film soundtrack composition. Sam, you have a lot of heart and it shows up big time in this one. I thought it was excellent. Swept me away.

You've got me eyeing an E-Bow. You do great stuff with it!

yeah...the "wadnik" made me get one already.... Al..you're slipping...you haven't gotten yours yet??

they've got a groovy blue light on them now.

if I get my butt in gear, I'll post my tripe with the ebow some day this century...
I've just been dealing with lightening strikes, falling storm trees, and 6 day work weeks this spring...
But..my jrt's still run the weave poles daily!!

Lol! I imagine there's a learning curve involved too! So, mixmkr, have you achieved mastery yet? I'd settle for a few cool effects!

Al... no mastery....as of yet.. and I'd say Sammy would say there is alot of stuff done on Ebow that would blow him away too....but he's got the title for usage here in the clinic...that's for sure. Listening to the instructional casette that comes with it starts to get you into that feeling..."wow...gonna need to practice ALOT with this!!!" Arpeggios seems to be kinda neat, and jumping around from string to string like a nimble ballerina is where the "practice" will show.

btw...I got my Deering Goodtime special banjo.. Now talk about a mind bender... tuned like a gtr with the high E dropped down to D. ...playing scales and you only hit ONE note on the B string... too weird!! And someone in Kentucky HAD to invent this basterd with that high G string where I am used to a low E...and starting on the 5th fret...what is that all about? Scruggs picking...whoa!! so much to learn... to much time spent at work...:(

yep, one of the best from you. got to love that ebow. great sound all way around. thanks.

A very beautiful song and one I'm sure your father will enjoy. I liked all the instruments, especially the strings. They fit in perfectly.

Not that's it's worth worrying about, but I'm hearing a little string/fret rattle on that acoustic. Some examples are: :06, :10, :39. I think they almost lend more ambience to the song than anything else. Some people might find it distracting. But I think your father is going to be too busy enjoying the song to worry about it.

Good job.

Great song. The strings are very nice, I love big "production", piano sounds great. Your father should be proud.

Your Dad sent you a guitar? Damn.

Great tune. I love the Ebow sounds you're getting. At 1:05 or so another part takes the lead. Sort of violin sounding. Was that synth or ebow? Anywho... lovely tune. Damn impressive. Your Dad should be proud of you. Hell... I'm proud of you! Great job son.
