How do I create that beautiful acoustic tone
plugging straight in.I know it can be done cause I've heard a phil keaggy CD done that way.I have a little nanoverb and a soundcard with pro logic(silver). What about the behringer mic preamp(the cheap one)will that help. can I mix without monitors I can't afford them yet

Keaggy probably has a great guitar w/ great electronics. He probably has some sort of "blender" system, which combines an under-the-saddle pickup and an internal condenser mic. The two signals are then mixed together. Fishman makes a system like this that comes standard in many Taylor Ac.Electrics. Maybe some more info about your guitar and electronics would help. I also frequent the acoustic guitar newsgroup (RMMGA) so people there might be more familiar with Keaggy's music than I am.
Personally, I like using mics to record ac. guitar. Currently using an AT-4033 and a Neumann KM184 -> Aphex pre.
Listen to my tunes at http://home.earthlink.net/~egordon99/seasons.html

Good luck!

Gordone is right... Keaggy has some pretty slick equipment. I'm not sure what brand of mic'ing system/pickup he has in his guitars, but there is obviously a microphone in there. If you have ever seen him live he often will sing into his guitar (so that his phrase sampler can sample vocals)... that of course requires an internally mounted microphone.

On a side note. I have had great luck recording my acoustic by using my peizo pickup (Martin Thinline Gold/Fishman) and an Audix condensor mic. I actually mic right in front of my picking hand facing slightly towards the bridge. This finds a fair amount of bass but also allows the sound of the pick and or picking fingers to be heard (if you desire that effect). The peizo is then used to round off the sound a little. pan them 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and you should have a thick sound.

Yeah Keaggy! What a player. He actually uses a combination (in studio) of built-in pickups and external microphones and blends the two. You can do this quite easily--just mic your guitar into one track and the pickup signal into the other. When you mix the two, pan, eq and effect them properly, you get the tone and warmth of the mic'd sound plus the dynamics and clarity of the pickup. Hard to beat.

Thanks elvis keaggy uses the LR baggs system
I appreciate your reply..... <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Velvet Elvis:
