I have a Taylor 310, no electronics. I chose it out of about 5. I love this guitar, and whatever tonal differences it has with higher end Taylors are fairly subtle to my ears. I know someone in the Ottawa Steve's Music store that I'd recommend dealing with, but not the Toronto store.
Hey there. I bought my Taylor at Steve's Music in Ottawa. I'm not a huge fan of Steve's. I bought my Strat at the same time and got a good deal. Had Lauzon's in Ottawa carried Strats (they do carry G&Ls but I wanted a Strat), I would've preferred to buy from them. They have a much better selection of Taylors and Martins.

MY friends dad has a Taylor 210-E Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric. They sell for around $1000. I don't know what that is canadian though.

If I was to replace my Larrivee with any guitar it would be a high end Tacoma. I have owned Tacomas in the past, and as much as my Larrivee is amazing, the Tacoma sound is unbelievably undervalued.

Couldn't agree more.

I was going to recommend looking at the Tacoma JK-50 model but I see they don't make it anymore. Any of the high end Tacomas would be good though, they sound very similar to Taylors IMHO. I really like the models that have the bigger body.

Acoustics to try..

Hi,

Although you can't really go wrong with what's mentioned above, I thought I'd mention the Gibson Songwriter Deluxe.

I wasn't really planning on a Gibson - since I've run across my fair share of 'questionables'/duds - but this one just knocked my socks off.. (purchased a little less than a year ago). If you can find a real good one, with nice tight seams and good finish work, give it a try. It's got elements of the 'Gibson Sound', but the EI rosewood b/s gives it a very sweet sound - with plenty of sustain. It's listed as one of Gibson's square-shoulder line (Hummingbird shape), but it's really quite a bit different - It's waist is tighter, which makes the SWD much more comfortable for me to play than my Martin dred.

Anyway - it may be worth a try! Best of luck.

Jim

i have an ovation that was given to me that definitely doesn't sound like poop when not plugged in. it's got great intonation, plays well, sounds pretty good for a cheaper guitar. actually, it's an older one w/ no preamp so is sounds like poop when it IS plugged in :)

How bout a Godin? That might make a nice transitiional instrument coming from electrics as you are.

Just backing up the Carvin Cobalt option. I've got the 750S and lemme just say, the Fishman preamp will deliver the brilliant sound you're after. It's a heck of a steal too, you could find another use for the $800 you'll save, I'm sure.

don't let that money burn a hole in your pocket. spend some time playing alot of guitars. spend some time on each guitar. buying an acoustic guitar is'nt the easiest thing to do. i would spend at least a week or two just playing and comparing.

Twelph Fret

This is a very cool guitar shop on the Danforth in Toronto. Easily the best guitar store I've ever been to. They could probably help you.

Wow, some great responses - you've all been quite helpful.
I feel like a little kid before entering the candy store :p ...

Funny, I had the exact same experience. I bought my delta 66 from Steve's in Ottawa and loved the service. But I was in the TO one the other day, helping a friend by a Norman and I hated the service...anyway, not that this directly affects my buying a guitar - but just thought it noteworthy...

Any suggestions on stores that carry Carvin's?
As previously alluded to, I want to play the guitar I buy a lot before I go ahead and buy it.
A friend of mine owns Long and McQuades in Stratford and is cool with me borrowing any guitar for a week before I buy it - he'll also match any price found on the web, bad thing is L & M don't carry everything; they tend to like Taylors & Larrivees.

cheers for all the help

Unless you live in Southern California where there are three Carvin stores, you'll have to order it and have it delivered. However, they have a very liberal 10 day return policy. If for any reason or no reason, you want to return it, all you pay for is the shipping. And there are always some Cobalts available at the Carvin "in-stock" page here so you won't be waiting an eternity for it.

Any idea what the heads up shipping would cost, also would there be a brokerage (cross border) fee?
cheers

Jumping in kinda late, but have you ever played a nice Guild?

I played a new guild a few years back, and I was really impressed by the ease of playing, the evenness of tone all the way up the fretboard, and the general feel of the setup. Worth looking at if you see them.

I just called the 800 number. Replace the standard US shipping charge with $59.97.

Thanks for the heads up.

Another quick question.
I'm looking at Larivee's is there a place that can give me a general breakdown of the differences between the -03 Recording Series, -05 Mahogany Select Series, -09 Rosewood Artist Series, etc...
cheers

I believe the only difference between the -03 and -05 series is aesthetic. The -03 has a matte finish with plain inlays and bindings, and the -05 has a glossy finish with a more extravagant inlay configuration. Some say that glossy finish yields a brighter tone from the -05.
The -09 is made of Rosewood which has a "boomier" bottom end. People prefer Rosewood for live work. IMO, the Rosewood series doesn't sound as nice and balanced as the Mahogany series.

How's about a Gibson songwriter Deluxe? provides a slightly "punchier" tone $1479.00 @MF

I took a look through the specs on Gibsons site for this, but couldn't see what electronics it had, this leads me to believe it doesn't have any...therefore would be a no-go. But in case I'm wrong, where did you find it for that price, I could only find it for $1679 and up.

gibson acoustics are kinda known for coming with high action.....you could find one that had good action though i'm sure....when shopping around for acoustics I liked the sound of the gibsons, but did not think they played well
