acoustic guitar mics

yeah those sound pretty good. quite good actually. sort of that "juicy" almost classical guitar type of sound that I like (could be partly that he's picking close to the neck). definitely better than the one C4 clip I've heard. i wonder how they sound on drums?

I like those NT5 clips too, mainly the XY one, the spaced pair is sort of boomy and muddy (probably could be fixed with a little EQ). they don't seem "dark" at all as some people call them

man i wish I could afford some 414s, hehe. but realistically, I bet with some good engineering I could get a similar or at least good enough sound out of some of the more affordable mics

Guess it shows how the same tool can get a different result with different users. Makes me think of similarities with woodworking.

or maybe these mics are inconsistent?

I'm hoping it's just other factors

Common problem with cheap mic's in general, but with my two they vary in output level a little but not in tone quality.

Who knows, maybe the guitarist got such a great tone he'd sound good on any mic.

I thought it was funny that the playing was pretty bad (or at least very sloppy), yet the tone was quite good. this possibly could go against the common internet guitar forum axiom that I love to bash "tone is in the fingers"

My impression of his playing was just that it was a very relaxed style with simple lines and a lot of repetition. Within those parameters I thought it pretty well done myself.

Now that I think about it, I've known a lot of players who got a beautiful tone but had just modest technical ability.

FWIW. So this little excursion into matched pair land has taught me a lot. I've been listening to lots of bands and really trying to listen to the type of acoustic sound they get. Critical listening once in a while is fun. And I'm finding out that many acoustic guitar sounds I took for granted I don't really like. I think lots of them sound "wrong" to me but I never noticed because I dug the song so much or that sound was part of the band's style. This blew me away. So I guess your sound is YOUR sound.

I'm liking the NT5's more and more for a very crisp acoustic sound a la Radiohead. Yes, I have to EQ down the bottom a bit but what's left is quite nice with that bit of rock crunch. I will be keeping these and probably add a more expensive "airy/musical" pair of mics to the locker in the future. Maybe this is why everyone here has such large mic lockers! Bring it on, the more mics the merrier.

While we're on the topic: I'm thinking of getting a Shure KSM44 for my acoustic guitar/vocal work. Right now I have an AT3035 (with ThreeQ preamp), it works ok, pretty good for vocals, but I don't really like the acoustic guitar on it, a bit boomy (yes, I've tried all the possible mic placements), muddy, lacks that clarity and presence. The guitar I'm using is nothing extradionary (a $200 Washburn), but it does sound much better when I play it than how it sounds recorded. Basically, would an expensive mic such as KSM44 fix all that? Is it a drastic improvement in quality from an AT3035? thanks
