Maybe those Tinkering with their mics might want to start another thread?
indeed, yes :)

Marik mentioned that the capsule for the ACM-310 is essentially the same as the ones for the MXL 603 - I tried pushing down an omni capsule onto the headless 310, and it sort of worked, but with a bunch of EM hum, presumably due to lack of shielding.
If you want to convert it into omni-only really badly send both capsules my way, just pay shipping. You know the address ;).
I'm thinking I going to try and reason my way through this one, and I'm not afraid to go totally ghetto to get it work. I'll post more soon.

Probably because the capsule case and mic body were not making a good connection. Try bridging it with a metal instrument and see if the hum goes away.

You should make a good contact between both, central connector and outside body.

If you have a capacitance meter measure the capsule--it should be 36pf.
Here are the steps for the surgery:

1) Unscrew collars on both capsules.

2) Very carefully with tweezers or small pliers lift the whole assembly.
Be extremely careful not to lose two spacers between diaphragm and backplate--they are made of transparent nylon and electrostatic attraction could kick them anywhere.

3) Remember how the whole assembly looks and particularly pay attention to how the holes in the brass backplate and clear plastic plate aligned. Now you will need to swap gold plated bolts/signal connectors. Unscrew them and pay attention that we also have there small brass spacers. I did not see the omni capsule, but it might not use those.

4) Do it on a very clean and even surface (might use a mirror)--turn both assemblies upside down to get out the diaphragms--do it with utmost care.

5) Swap the diaphragms. Be very careful and hold it by the rim only--don't touch the gold surface. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS CLEAN AND FREE OF DUST!!!

6) Install spacers.

7) Put backplate assembly and tighten the collar until you read 36pf (or skip the last).

Enjoy your new omni capsules.

Best, M
