I am recording on a Roland VS-2480CD. I'm currently mixing with a pair of Fostex PM-1 monitors. They don't seem to be very accurate... what I hear through the monitors and what ends up on CD sounds a bit different. What's a good set of monitors that are fairly accurate? I was considering a set of Roland DS-90As. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for responses.

The roland monitors have a bad reputation, I have never heard anything good about them (I have never used them either) The only real moniors I've ever used are the Tannoy Proto Js which seem good and the M-audio 5 inch one. Any of those two would give you better results then the Roland probably. Searh monitors on the site and you should get more info then you'll ever need.

I use M-Audio 5 whatever SBs. Every monitor gives you something different. You just have to learn them. With the M Audios (mine anyway) the high frequencies don't transfer that great. And they are a bit bass thin (more bass on the cd than thru monitors). The mids seem to carry across different systems well though. But this is generally what will happen with most nearfield monitors (that most of us can afford anyway). Just in varying amounts. For $300 for the M-Audios though, I certainly won't complain. Pretty much the cheapest powered monitors you will find and they do a pretty good job.

Yea the 5 inch woofer isn't exactly bass friendly. Most people say 6.5 inch woofers are barley enough. For good bass response people say you need an 8 inch driver, or a sub.

But you make do with what you have!

Go take a Listen to Blue SKY System One which include two 100W monitors an a 200W Sub. They are good bit more expensive then your Fostex monitors however, but you didn't mention price. They are the best active monitor syetem I have heard, whole package around $1395.

Unfortunatly i can't afford those very expensive monitors, so i'm aiming at the Yorkville YSM1p's. Only a 6.5 inch woofer, but apparantly awesome monitors. Personally i'd either get the Yorkvilles, the mackies, or the blue sky's. I also hear the Tannoy reveals are good but i haven't heard them.

for a NEARfield monitor, smaller woofers are perfectly acceptable and in most cases, advised....

YSM-1's here. I'm on my second pair. They're just over $200 US. At this price point, these have to be one of the best nearfields IMHO.

I'm happy with my Tannoy Reveal actives. Whatever you end up getting, just spend hours listenting to pro mixes on them before you mix yourself. Learn their sound.

Forget the rolands. They are so hyped on top and in the upper mids they make aiwa look flat. In that price range, check out the mackies or the tannoy 800s.

Track and Vox, how would you compare the Y2M's to the NS10s? Are they worth the money? I'm kinda torn on whether or not to get some other monitors to augment the NS10's. It doesn't seem like I can get much of a difference without stepping up into the $1K+ market. I don't even think the Mackie's are worth the expense.

I have had the NS10s and Yorks passive,

Just got a set of 824s.. Huge difference in sound and price but I think they were worth it.

I am remixing now,, if that gives you an idea as to sound.

But overall for the price,,, I think the Yorks are the best route.. they suprized me when I got my first set.

Ambi- Not yet. There is one place in town that has them and they are only open 9-5. I need to play hooky from work and go check them out one of these days.

Malcolm- Thanks for the input.

I have M-Audio BX8s and they give a really good flat representation of what's been recorded, but as with any set of powered monitors under $500 you probably wanna get a subwoofer, or you're gonna get way to much low when you play what you recorded on a stereo system.

I'm IN LOVE with my BlueSky System One. A bit expensive but I have no regrets!!!

I had Events 2020bas before...

I have listened to these as well and this is what I thought as I listened, harsh sounding in the highs, lows don't reproduce very strong, and what the hell is going on with the mids? I think the Alesis M1's were just a bit better for overall smoothness of sound.

k bye
