I am about to purchase a new accoustic guitar. At the moment it looks like I may buy a Martin JM but have also been looking at Epiphone's hummingbird, dove and Ej-200. I really like the look of the EJ-200 (not played one yet)but I do not think that it has a solid top-not ideal. Is there a close alternative?, does it have a solid top?, how do you view the Martin at around double the price?

I don't know much about the guitars you mentioned. All I know is that I would never buy a guitar without playing it first. Go with your ears.

Did you post this in another forum eariler? Oh well...

Go Canadian...

Best guitar for the money guarenteed. All solid tops, all handmade, and starting at 400$.

Check out:
Seagul
Simon & Patrick (My favorite)
Art & Lutheir
Godin

I work in a guitar store, and constantly recomend these to people who come in looking to get a Martin or Taylor at 600$, they can do it, but it will be a peice of crap...

You mentioned that tou liked the look of an axe, but you never played it yet....One piece of advice I can give and I think it's important. THE BIGGEST MISTAKE A POTENTIAL AXE PURCHASER CAN MAKE, WHETHER IT'S ACOUSTIC OR ELECTRIC IS.......BUYING A GUITAR BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT LOOKS..........LET ME REPEAT......NEVER BUY A GUITAR BASED ON LOOKS.........For example, I have managed to play two Les Pauls that had the serial numbers only a few numbers apart.......both looked great.......and both came out of the factory just hours apart.......one played great, the other played like a Japanese copy of a Les Paul....and I don;t know why, but my point is, the guitar is a "feel" instrument....Same thing with women, some of the best looking ones, with the shiniest hair, the brightest eyes, the most curves, the most luscious lips....are the ones that are the toughest to play.......and try to mention "oral" and they're running out the door. Don't judge a book by it's cover doesn't even come close to what it really means when dealing with "good looking guitars". Do yourself a favour and buy a guitar that feels right.........you deserve it!
Thanks, Super.

That EJ-200 is an awesome axe but it's going to need some rework to reset the neck in about six months after purchase.
Pretty darn stable after that.
I call her Marilyn 'cause she's an amazingly loud, very pretty Jumbo blonde. She's got a thunderous bottom end and a really sparkling high end with respectable midrange response. Her neck is extremely playable- no squeezing involved.
Her serial # is: 94110043
You can hear her on the H/R comp CD.

doc, for some reason I thoght Marilyn was one of your cats! glad I got that cleared up!

mastahnke, I don't have a problem with any of the guitar recommendations you made, but if you think Taylor and Martin make ANY pieces of crap you have poor judgement. I may not work in a guitar store, but I've had my hands on hundreds of Martins and Taylors, Taylors especially, and they definitely do not make any pieces of crap. When you represent yourself as some sort of guitar expert because you work in a guitar store and then make careless, irresponsible statements to someone who is looking for solid advice, you will lose respect.

Just thinkin that.... this guitar question might get better/more responses in the guitar section of this BBS =)

Hey, Krystof01 - switch over to the guitar forum for a moment, at this same site. We just went through this, I yakked a lot and now I'm out of breath.

Basic idea is find your price point and learn what the market has in that range. You may be surprised at how well you can do out there.

Please tell us more about Marilyn's "thunderous bottom".......

If you love playing as a first hobby or career, can afford it, just buy the best,
a hand made James Olson. Yes, it will cost $4500. and a 18 month wait, but it is so sweet to the ears and recordings. James Taylor lives for his Olson guitars...
