I'm broke. But I need monitor(s). Would it be better to buy a cheap-ass pair of whatever-I-can-afford, or buy one decent monitor and mix in mono until I can afford the other.

If only Solomon was a mix-master...

How cheap is cheap? Tannoy Reveals are £200 and are reckoned to be okay. I don't know if you can just connect one monitor.

I'll do you 1 better; Sammy's got Tannoy Proto-J's for $179!
(They were $150 a few weeks ago but went up)

I once read an article about the late Mark Sandman of Morphine. He prided himself in never paying more than $100 for a bass. He used a Tascam 8 track cassette recorder, and a single radio shack bookshelf speaker to record and mix demos.

I'm guessing his talent level far surpassed any equipment handicaps he had.

So, can you use one speaker? Yes.
Should you use one speaker? No. (IMO)

I have a pair of Radio Shack Optimus Speakers. They were $45.00 a piece, and sound fantastic. No flames. You can never have too many sytems to check your mixes on.

Garg...
Those are the ones Sandman had, I don't recall what model #, tho..

I actually have a pair, but they're not connected to my recording setup. They actually sound pretty damn good. I mounted them on the RS brackets up in the corners of my kids' playroom. After hanging around here, and learning about speaker placement, I now know why they sound so good that way.

both the Optimus or the ProtoJ's are good options...of course them ProtoJ's are better but more $$$$....id definitely get 2 to mix......
