About these monitors?

my question is: how neccessary is it to have have a good set of monitors? I'm just a hobbiest starting out and I'm using my stereo for playback, and I find I have to crank the volume and faders way up to hear it good but by then it sounds nasty. do I possibly need to check the recording levels, is it my stereo, or do I need a good set of monitors? If so, are their any inexpensive pairs that are any good? I'm 23 years old so everything I buy has to be a neccessity as well as inexpensive. Help is appreciated greatly. I'm using a fostex VM200 and VR800. thanks.

hi there.

check your sound in your computer first,
its a little speaker in the lower of the right side of your computer...

the monitors are for sound quality,
but if your volumes are low,
your volumes are low. :p
 
i think u do need some monitors..umm...i think fostex makes some that are powered and about $199.99...called the ps-3's..check them out ...monitors would eventually become a necessity because u cant get a good mix if u cant hear the sound good
 
ALLY - while you are learning your monitors are your most important component. It's on your monitors that you compare your CD's with your own recordings and it's on your monitors that you learn how to listen. Get a good set like Tannoy Reveals or Event 20/20 and listen to all your favourite CDs on them and by then you will be ready to start recording.

Thanks for the help guys, i'll have to shop around a little bit to see what I can afford. But it will definetly be my next purchase. oh and also, I'm looking through some catalogues and I noticed some of them are powered. are the ones that don't say powered In need of some sort of power amp? should the frequency response or size of the speaker figure into my shopping? THanks alot.
 
You are correct in ur assuption ALLY. the one that dont say powered need a power amp...and u have to go out abd buy that also...they are some real good, cheap powered apms out there....shop arond and get the ones that U think sound the best and suit ur need and ur budget the best..good luck hun... GO YANKEEES!!!!! (IM FROM THE BRONX I HAD TO SAY THAT )

LOL... HEY JOHN, IF U WERE RFOM THE BRONX YOU WOULD WANT TO SHOUT ALSO!...BUT ANYWAY, WHAT DO U THINK ARE THE BEST MONITORS OUT THERE FOR A MICROSCOPIC BUDGET? MAYBE YOU CAN REFER A SET TO OUR FRIEND ALLY. AND WHAT MONITORS DO YOU USE?
 
Treble - I know of a guy who went out with $300 to buy a friend a pair of speakers - he found this set of small speakers that he thought sounded OK so he bought them. He tried them out in his studio and found that they were better than he thought. He then used them for the next 10 years and set a standard for Nearfield Monitors. The guys name was Bob Clearmountain and the speakers were Yamaha NS10s.
Why not go out and see what you can find in the Bronx!!

What everyone forgets to mention is that Bob was not looking for REFERENCE monitors - he wanted to hear mixes on what would be considered "dumpy, average consumer speakers" and the NS-10s fit the bill perfectly.

Yamaha got wind of this and developed a marketing strategy around them - providing them free to any studio that wanted them. Studio photos were taken with them in the picture and, well, you get the idea... it had nothing to do with them being better, or amazing or any of the other attributes people ascribe to them.

You can use any speaker to monitor on - the key is learning how they sound and how to use them. The same applies if you're using NS-10s, Meyers or Westlakes.......

No, not brand wars (although everyone has their own preferences) -- just clearing up possible misconceptions and urban legends about the NS-10s unwarranted "mystique"!!

Yamaha MSP10's

I'm wondering if Yamaha's twisted logic applies to their new MSP10 powered monitors.... anybody tested these monitors? I'm thinking of getting them when i get some cash and no where near here sells em, so I'm just wondering if they are worth checking out.. later.

Absolutely not Dougie, I think the last sentence in my post states my point quite clearly.......

this bronx boy has a question of his own that i have never heard anyone ask....how heavily is the sound of the monitor linked to the quality of the mixer it is attached to ?
