? about adding to a stereo mixdown

Hello,

About a year ago I recorded some music in a studio but never got the chance to record vocals or the guitar solo. The studio shut down and the guy that ran it gave me a stereo mixdown of the song but no project files disc. Now I have my own project studio and I want to add vocals and solo to the stereo mix. My question is, am I going to have problems getting the vocals and solo to sit well in the mix? If so, is there anything I can do to remedy this?

Possibly. However, you won't know for sure until you try.

Inability to eq or change the panning on the individual backing tracks will present problems - but it doesn't seem like you have a lot of options.

It doesn't cost you anything to try, and you might be pleasantly surprised. One thing to consider is putting a very slight unifying reverb over the entire mix to try even out some of the room differences.

As far as "unifying" the mix is concerned, this will also give you a good chance to experiment with stuff you might not normally mess with -

If the mix is polished and compressed heavily, you may have to do a lot of messing around *on the way in* to get it to sit well. Same with EQ'ing.
