anyone using live 8??? ive been an ableton user for a couple of years now...kinda know my way around it...any suggestions to a better programme?? and a the reasons too??? dont see any threads on ableton ...umm why not...sry im new

thx mev

Hey mev...Ive been using it since August and I love it...I use Sonar Studio 8 as well but Lives the one I always record on now..

Havent used any other ableton products so cant compare it with other versions...but put it this way I got a lite version with an axiom and I knew straight away this was the right DAW for me...I got Sampler free with it too (think that deal was only for a month though)...fantastic instrument..

I make electronic and guitar stuff and this works for both..Ive even used the scene view for the guitar stuff but in truth I just use it on the traditional screen more often than not..

I know warping will be different for you compared to 7 and before, its the beats that move not the markers...took me about 10 mins to find my way around it with a typical male "I dont read manuals" gusto

Didnt go for the suite version, I dont think its an all in one tool and I used outboard synths etc aanyway plus it doesnt have Sonars capabilities when mixing, though thats nit picking...apart from that Id give 10/10..

umm..

i dont see any live threads on this forum...just wondering why???/
i use live8 for 90s techno lol...

its not that popular with people who play and record more traditional stuff...not because it cant but because people tend to stick to what they started on and Live used to be mainly for electronica etc

better programmes?

depends what your looking for..Ive demoed a few, including Studio One which I thought was fantastic but still too new...things like panning and fader control on the mixing desk were pretty awful..id say a few versions down the line this might be the one to beat

electronica!!!!

i guess im in the wrong place because im guessing the shit i create is classed as electronica.....

same with some of my stuff and a few other folks here...depends if you want to spend your time listening to nintendo music or actually learning how to mix and produce music well...you'll get the latter here :)

I've been using Ableton ever since I first started recording on a M-Audio BlackBox some years ago and haven't really tried anything else. Now I've recorded a few bands, and I'm not a sound master so I haven't been able to make it sound 100% professional as of yet but hopefully with some new equipment I can.

nintendo!!

im more of a zx spectrum type ....my bro told me live8 is a toy..lol...he uses logic...im a pc...lol
anyhoo if i could be arsed id go through the tutorials on live8 but i cant be arsed so im guessing im missing a shit load of "features" ...i got a vst called battery3 an oxygen25 midi controller and a few soft synths and i get a buzz messing with noises lol isnt that the point>>>???#

aye...if you get stuck with anything on Live, Im sure you wont, then just ask..I know my way around it pretty well now..i fucking love it, its like an instrument as well as a DAW

a couple of tips for starters:

to keep the vst instrument/plugin on top, no matter what channel you bring up, go to preferences > look and feel and disable auto hide

for quick looping just highlight the area and press ctrl + L

to name a whole load of scenes just press ctrl + R for the first/top one and then tab to move down without pressing the shortcut again

have you tried any live packs? Puremagnetik have a great site with freebies..I subscribe $5 a month and get a Live pack every month or so for that..some great some not so great..I got a great upright bass and 909 samples Ive used recently

Ive tried the Ableton and the Cakewalk forums and to be honest you'll get more helpful feedback in the MP3 clinic here than either of those sites...its fairly close knit here so the idea is to comment on other mixes and folks will give yours a critique..no matter the genre..all good informative stuff..no fake praise either

:)

re:

im using an asus xonar sound card which i just installed yesterday..to improve the sound from my av30 speakers as the onboard audio wasnt up for the job...the thing is i want gettin the latency before the new sound card...ill go thro pref. in live again see if i can remedy the latency...

Level problem or buffer size

Just getting started with Live 8. My interface is M-audio ultra usb. I am getting what I would call a spike accross all tracks at the same time. If the buffer is too small would I hear that or would it be a drop in sound? If it was the level on one track would I see and hear that accross all tracks.

This is just a suggestion, because I wasn't using this board when I was first using Live, but there are many resources that will teach you about live that you will have a hard time accomplishing by playing around and asking questions.

The built-in tutorials that you can view from the "Help" menu in the program will show you the basics, and taking a visit to ableton.com will give you basic tutorials and even some intermediate levelled ones.

The booklet that came in the box is enough to get started but won't show you as much as the web site.

If your problems are latency and hardware there's always the audio interface product manual and the product forums that most likely exist on its manufacturer's web site. (Basic hardware problems are either invalid connections or setting up the sample rates wrong in your DAW or hardware driver.)

Google, of course, is the main source of problematic information. I'd say at least half of everything I know about recording was from google searching.

A resource that I've recently found to be helpful as I had began to show a friend of mine how to do this recording stuff are a few DVDs I picked up at Guitar Center that were mostly basic stuff but had a few extra tips about miking and software mixes I hadn't thought of.

Hope this helps.
