we don't need rest!!
Personally, I like Erlands stuff the best, as far as having "hit" potential, and potential commercial success, and just general, "this guy is good" kinda feeling. His mixes have definate room for improvement, and some production would put some of his stuff over the top, but the raw core is so evident with this guy, you'd have to live under a rock to not see it. No...his chops aren't the best either, nor necessarily his song structure either...but somethings happening across the pond...that's for sure. I need to comment more on his stuff, but have just generally been kinda speachless with his posts...

Samicide runs a 2nd for me. A solid style coming from this wanker, that you can smell a mile away. To me, his drop tuned ambushes sound better than anything on the radio that might be close to his genre. I can even live with his "wandering" song writing and song structure. Hey, a song can be a ABCD form song, right?? sure it can..

funny thing too... I get a strong feeling that both these guys have the minimum equipment (Erland, I know for sure from his posts and microphone lusting), and this just makes this all the richer. Sammy and his ebow and his portastudio...my goodness. You should be the poster child for Tascam.

Erland!

Appreciate that mix. :)

I would have to say Erland for many reasons.. His tunes are done with the minimal, and most effective approach. It's all about the melody, and it comes from a good place with him... and that place is a happy one..

My tunes are mad effects and 'end of my rope' type stuff..:) They 'usually' come from an unhappy place.. This poll is like asking,

'What would you rather feel, happy or sad?'

thanks for the mention though mix......It gave me a laugh. :D

samicide...........like suicide, pesticide, homicide, petrified, nullified...etc. :D

I second the Erland vote... I just finished listening to "from a boy to a girl" for the six trillionth time... :p

Too funny!

Hey mix, this is a pretty funny thread... I can see 3 pages of 'Erland rules' coming..:D

thanks! :D I know you meant well :p

macle, great vocal/production/music composition

would have voted for erland, but I can't dance with his stuff unless he adds some beats to them :)

Favorite guitarists:

gotta give it to mixmkr and emeric

AL

SAMICIDE for versatility alone, he plays every instrument good!
Also my choice for most creative guitarist!! Erland is good but Samicide plays so many different styles you dont know what he will come up with next!

Samicide rules! ;)

There's a lot to like here, that's for sure. Emeric's got it going on as does Voxvender. Macle definately has a great sound too but Erland's #1.

1.Erland(in the hands of a great producer and engineer his songs would sprout wings and friggin fly)

2.MIXMKR(some of the cleanest and most professional sounding mixes around!)

3.Voxvendor(Great pop tune writer with the ability to layer things without making the mix sound like overkill)

4.Sabbath-Samicide(Some of the strangest and best music on the board.I mean can you imagine a better rock cover of the "Men without hats" tune!?!)

5.J.marcomb(His music takes me to a place thats quiet for a change!)

1. macle

2. Erland

:)

macles production/arrangement/singing skills are the bomb....and, of course his girl isn't hurting the operation either. hehe..all around..solid.

Thgis would be hard for me to answer, as I have heard many great things from members here. When you say best, do you mean best singer, best songwriter, best recording, best engineer, etc?

"The award for best singer/songwriter/producer engineer in a semi country/folk alternative category goes to..."

Singer/songwriter goes to Erland for the moment but Mixmkr, Blue Bear, and many others have better sounding tracks by far. Then, there are people like Lt. Bob that have the chops to really wail.

Its funny, but we all end up wearing multiple hats. Some are great engineers, some are great mixers, some great singers, great musicians or arrangers, and some great songwriters, etc. We should all take pride in what we do well and realise that there probably won't be one person who excels beyond all others in all these categories. If there is, I move that this person be banished from the board immediately so as not to threaten my fragile ego :D

I would say macle for all round musicianship and arrangeing (plus his girlfriend). They make great songs.
.
Scott.

Scott, I give you Honourable Mention. Your stuff kicks serious ass too.

woowaa

what a fantastic place! back from the old revision. I am blown away most of the time here.

The first song I downloaded when i found this forum was a song by Macle. I was totally gobsmacked by his stuff! the rest that followed, well, outstanding.

cheers to everyone here...

I did not say Kabudokan because he had not been here in a while, but he is posting again, so KABUDOKAN.

Yeah I agree with everybody mentioned: Erland, Macle, Samicide, Lt. Bob, Mixmkr--all these dudes have very obvious talents both with their choice of instrument(s), and with mixing/arranging and hence can put out some really complete, clean sounding works. Though I'm not a huge rap fan (or a yankees fan for that matter:), I think that gec puts together some really interesting stuff and is capable of different styles. I think Chriss and Clubzero put out the best "dance" stuff on this board, both good arrangement wise and tip-top on production, very releasable stuff. I think Track Rats jams are really fun to listen to, as are Q's pieces. Roel has offered some cool suprises of a diverse nature. Also like the (two) tunes I've heard from Barefoot.

I wish that everybody in the clinic was a bit more like dudes like Mixmkr and samicide (among a FEW others) in that they listened/critiqued to every style, whether or not it was even enjoyable or something they would listen to on a regular basis or buy. One of my most important (long-term) goals with this board is to try and bridge some damn gaps with some of you dudes who I SO respect, both musically and in general. I'm sick of hearing "a DJ is not a musician", "chain a monkey to a computer and you get techno", and scads of other ignorant remarks. It's pure bullshit that most of the dudes in the DJ/Hip-Hop forum don't even come here to get their tunes critiqued cause they won't get any responses. Sometimes I wonder if some/many of you guys learned anything from the ignorance/close-mindedness of past generations on matters that SO parallel these gaps. Anyways, sorry to totally veer from the point here, just a topic that's constantly on my mind.

Diversify,

Laj

Remember the history of the "DJ / musician" thing, as well as most of the others in the "scads bin" - it really is tongue in cheek. The DJ thing developed in a high theatre style melodrama thread involving one of our members who agreed to a family gig, learned after someone committed him to it that it was to be a DJ thing, and then at the wedding the bride would only listen to gangsta rap until her mother stepped in. So the phrase is as much about the sitcom real life comedies we encounter as it is about any notions of "musicianship." It has that slapstick angle, like the definition of perfect pitch - being able to toss a banjo and an accordian into the dumpster at the same time.

I hear ya Treeline, and I guess I just wasn't around when that "discussion" came into existence, and hence am ignorant to it's roots, thanks for explaining that to me:). I dunno it's just something I think about alot, and I am always trying to find a way to discuss it civily with you all, though the timing never seems right. I'll go away now:):).

Hey Laj, I for one really like old school hip hop.. BUT it is a two way street my brother.... I dont see many hip hop guys commenting on my tunes either. As a matter of fact, you havent checked out my latest tunes yourself. ;) I am starting to 'mostly' just comment on the peoples stuff who comment on mine. I have a very fast connection and I used to comment on everything. After a while I got tired of people not returning the listen, so now I mainly comment on people who have checked out my tunes, whether they liked them or hated them.. I think the main reason why I get a lot of reponse, is because I give a lot of response.. If these hip hop dudes want responses, they should give some feedback to others and it might work out.

Dont know if this means anything, but I just felt like typing something...

"Wanna hear it again, we got a force, Enemy down, the L.I. circuit sound." :D "Known as the poetic- political miracle son, I'm Public Enemy number one!" (P.E.) :p

I've commented on a few dance tracks and some stuff I don't really listen to. I admit not doing it that often, because I usually concentrate on music I can relate to or know something about. For example, I wouldn't know much about hip hop mixing, and what it should be soundwise. By this, I mean I don't know what is generally considered a good sounding hip hop mix. Of course, I'm not sure if the mixing itself is that important in it, but rather the groove, beat and the lyrics. So, if you'll catch me reviewing some dance, trance or hip hop, bear in mind that I'm not an expert on those genres. Still, I really should comment on more of those, because if everybody only stick to their genres, the music world gets divided even more into genres. I hope I made some sense.

Samicide/Cranky,

Yeah sorry bout griping guys, I'm really not into hip-hop AT ALL, I too love old school PE, KRS, NWA (yup), etc. I'm also only into a little bit of "dance" music, though electronica is defintely my mainstay, that is if it has greater implications than bmm...tsh...bmmm...tsh...bullshit, which admitedly is not easy to find in the ever growing market of bullshit. I wasn't really trying to advocate for those guys in the hip-hop forum, I know they (most) don't even bother trying out others styles/critiquing, but I guess that's the point, it's not one "side" or the other, there is definitely a huge gap between guys who dig mostly/only"organic" (rock, pop, classical, jazz) stuff and those who jive on "other" shizzy (hip-hop, dance, ambient, etc). I just think that sucks ass, and I wish it didn't exist. CrankyOne you make good points about not having a knowledge base for some styles, so not really being able to aptly critique such pieces, I hear you but I think your knowledge of what any tune could do to move you is knowledge enough for you to just say what it might need, in lue of being ridiculed for not knowing, which I guess makes my point null/void, but I digress as usual. I'm glad you guys love your music and you are trying and my respect for all you all grows all the time.

*On my way to checking Samicide's newest tune....*
