I have found that when I break a string on a guitar and have to work around it, it opens new avenues of exploration for me.
There were times I would remove a string from a guitar just to learn more.

Try limiting yourself to playing on one string only, for 30 minutes, then switch strings. It opens up some cool ideas, you wouldn't normally think of.

Keith Richards has been doing this for 30 years.

Isn't that an oxymoron? I shook hands with Kieth Richards once. It felt like touching a cadaver.

For more ideas along these lines, get Mick Goodrick's book, "The Advancing Guitarist." It is one of the most inspiring and educational books on guitar you will ever read.

i found an old stella tenor guitar at starvation army for $5. it's supposed to be tuned like a viola, but i just strung it ADGB. it's a nice change from my my other acoustics (both classicals).

That's cool j dubb. I started playing guitar because of my grandfather, who played tenor guitar. Somewhere in someones closet is an old Gibson he ordered with a tenor neck. That and his player piece...with a harominca holder welded together and bolted onto the body lol.

some of the coolest new wave guitar licks ever were by ricky wilson from the b52's (deceased). he used to take out the D and the G strings- the 2 middle ones- leaving all low end and high range. no mid. very cool sound. listen to private idaho. amazing.
i had written one song years ago where i alternated 12 string guitar strings on my six string electric.
high E, low A, high D, G, B, E
the rhythm didn't give the results i had hoped for, but the lead part was pretty wierd and cool- it bounced around alot.

The Presidents Of The United States Of America's debut cd rocks all the way thru. Can't remember the tunings but I know the guitar player used 4 strings and the bass player used 2 on every song, catchiest pop recording of the 90's.

or, you could listen to mark sandman of morphine, who always played a 2-stringed bass. dana colley was likewise capable of only two notes at a time (by playing two saxes simultaneously).

and drummer billy conway was born with only two arms and two legs.

did you guys really forget to mention django reinhardt?
