Ever heard ... let's see ... Velvet Underground? Arcade Fire? Wilco? Nirvana? The Beatles?

Should I go on?

I really dont know what to say. Show me a Beatles song with noticably out of tune string players and I will eat a dogs penis. I am assuming you are talking about something utterly different i.e. the SONG. I am speaking of the background string parts i.e. violin, viola, cello. They are English Chamber Orchestra and London Symphony players, one of them is a close friend. Listen to Eleanor Rigby or She's leaving Home, how is the string intonation?? Pretty damn good.

hahaha...yes. i recently was told to leave so i could "do my own thing"

that was me. when did you see us?

its "casados" by the way

I didn't see, you, but I saw that from your friends that casados played TH, so I checked out their page and saw that you were listed under +/-. I guess you're '-' now, huh?

Sad to say, but TH is my point of origin. Now you know why I left. :D

Yes it's pretty damn good, but it's not "perfect." It's a lot closer than what you hear on other recordings. There's a lot of gray area between "in tune" and clearly "out of tune." That's my whole point. Short of using a computer, there's no such thing as "perfect" intonation.

Certain musics have certain stylistic traits. For pop music, yes the string parts are pretty darn in tune; for classical it's just as important. But for indie music (as this guy is clearly making) it's not the same type of standard. My objection is with you separating the strings for some reason and saying that they should always be played perfectly in tune.

I'll bet there are plenty of country fiddle tunes where the intonation is not dead on and it lends a certain authenticity to the sound.

And why can singers do as the wish? What's the difference between a singer and a string instrument? Both of them are "All by ear." Why is it that it doesn't bother you when bg vocal parts aren't perfectly in tune (like many, many Rolling Stones recordings), but it does when string parts aren't perfectly in tune?

Granted, if your desire is to play with the London Philharmonic, then yeah you need to have an exacting attention to your intonation. But his music is totally different than what they play, and it's different than "She's Leaving Home" and "Eleanor Rigby" as well.

Really nice song and arrangement. The string playing is very creative. I'll take real instruments with character but funky intonation over artificial ones that are more accurate in pitch.

This has tremendous potential, so I see where David is coming from re trying to get the strings more in tune.

And of course there's no such thing as perfect intonation. That's why vibrato exists. :D ...But there is intonation that's accurate-enough-to-make-consonance-consonant-and-dissonance-dissonant, and that'd be good to shoot for in the future in order to bring the sound quality up to the quality level of the ideas.

This thread is interesting...

I have listening some acoustic guitar recordings here with untuned instruments (as well singers wanting advice for better mics and pres while they should be interested on "tuning" his/her voices) and my ears hurts with some recordings...

But is not Cello´s example. He´s making another kind of music (like "Indian",he saids) .My FIRST impression about "Friends" were ok (and I wrote giving congrats for the creative job he did).

After read David comments and listening again, I could understand David too...On a SECOND ("technica"l) audition,I saw strings/guitar/synth with "not so little pitch issues".Technically, he´s right. But the song has style and works...

Liked this a lot cello. Really good stuff. This is as close to perfect as I care to hear. :p

Cool tune for sure I wish I played the strings like you. The vocals need to come up for sure you voice is great now lets hear it!

First off this sounds Like Adem... and that's a good thing.

I've listened to a lot if this nu-folk stuff cos I am involved with a wee radio station that plays a lot of that style of music (www.thefword.fm). Cello_pudding is right in that the indie-folk movement (i hate needing to come up with names for it) doesn't care that much for hi-fi, exacting production. Out-of-tune is the new in-tune... lo-fi is the new hi-fi... etc etc...

If that's the sound you are after then go for it... Joanna Newsom doesn't always sing in tune but what she does is beautiful... same with Devendra Banhart. It works for them so it can work for you. It's the lo-fi, scrappy nature of the early recordings from these people won them their fans and got them where they are now.

On the other hand, Kempers is right. The strings are out of tune and I personally think that there's no reason that you shouldn't make things sound as good as you can make them. People can see past bad intonation and still love the music but if it's deliberate then that's hard to understand.

I do get where you are coming and I love the stuff you are doing. I really do. It's definately to my tastes and while there is lots of good stuff on homerecording it's not always my thing. This is.

Keep it up.

haha...this thread got bumped. thanks.

i wondered why i was getting a bunch of plays and adds today.
