i know there are threads with questions similar to this one, but i am currently planning and budgetting my soon-to-be home studio, and i'm trying to get the most out of my money and the best sound i can without putting myself in debt for the next 25 years.
i'm looking to keep my budget under $4500 USD, but if i need to, for some things i can press the wallet (overheads, outboard gear, etc).
i've already decided that i will be running protools and buying a mac as well, so that i can do mixing jobs for my friends with protools (mixing is my forte). so far my costs are looking like this:
-a good iMac G5 17", $1500
-digi 002 rack with protools LE 7.0, $1200
-3 SM57, $240
-D112 bass drum mike, $150
-sansamp bass driver DI, $190
-assorted cords, stands, cables, hot asian female to sit on my couch while i mix, $400
-isolation headphones for the drummer, $50
you'll notice there are important items missing here. i'm wondering about the best large diaphragm microphone for the buck. i just worked with a local guy who had two $200 LD mikes and they sounded amazing, i think they were AKG 30... i can't remember. i'll ask him. not a big deal. i'm wondering about YOUR opinions. something that will give me a nice warm sound for my overhead mikes.
secondly, i know NOTHING about monitors. i'm going to need them. help.
thirdly, how do i go about using a mixer to allow me to use more than 4 mikes at the same time [the digi 002 only has 4 channels... ; ( ]? i don't really know anything about that. help me, again.
if i could be directed toward any previous threads, that'd be cool. thanks guys. ; )
