a silly question perhaps

building the new studio, yadda yadda yadda...i feel ive got a good plan for what i'm going to be building...and then what seems like a tremendous problem.

i of course plan on treating my live room for both isolation and then for room sound....but how am i supposed to hang my traps and absorber panels???
i see people putting string on the backs of theirs, but i'm certainly not expected to put an eyehook in my perfectly caulked up wall am i???

options??

Adhesive tubes come with most packs of treatment panels. I've also heard that you can use velcro strips if you don't want to mess with any sticky messes.

hm..lemme clarify for you...
i'm not putting up 1x1 pieces of foam...
im building traps out of mdf, fabric and rigid fiberglass

Wood screws are nice.

Make a cleat on the back of the treatment, and screw a cleat on the wall for it to hang on.

well
the wall is 2 layers of 5/8" sheetrock on resilient channel on the frame...

so obviously i cant screw into stud...how much can i support on the rock itself?

If your traps are framed it seems you could use two screws like a foot apart and some picture hanging wire with "Molly" inserts in each hole or toggle type hollow wall hangers. I've mounted pretty heavy book shelves in drywall with the Mollys, but if the goal is to maintain air tight integrity of the wall, then it does pose an interesting problem.

that is the goal, but it seems like so many people must have had it before

but is everyone preaching to acoustically caulk up your room, leaving not a hole, and then randomly screwing right through it without a thought?

Well if you are that worried that an extreamly small hole will do you harm then put some caulk around the screw and then screw it in or something to seal it.

Liquid nails should be able to hold up most traps if you don't want to use screws. It works fine for large storage cabinets. You just need to hold the traps up with something while the glue dries.

There's probably something I'm missing here, Ork, because I don't see the harm in putting screws into sheetrock and I do see a lot of benefit to it. Hanging traps and absorbers a few inches away from the walls dramatically increases their effectiveness, so I'd advise against gluing them directly to the wall.

Since you apparently don't have studs to drill into, my recommendation would be to sink a couple of E-Z Anchors (Like these: http://www.smithfast.com/ezanc.htm) into the drywall and then screw the hangers of your choice to those. That's how I put up my broadband absorbers: http://www.hp-h.com/p/hapicmpur/broadbandabsorbers.htm. E-Z Anchors come in different sizes that bear different weights, so be sure to get the hefty ones.
