A ride that doesn't ring like crazy?

I'm currently using the crappy Zildjian 20" ZXT Rock ride that came from a cymbal starter pack, and the darn thing rings like a church bell! More than about 2 measures of a riff on it and you can't hardly hear the ping of the stick impact over the ringing. Anyone know offhand of a good ride that will ping without ringing so much?

For reference, if anyone has heard the latest Coldplay album (X&Y), I'm looking for something like the ride sound in the latter half of the song "Fix You" (Track 4).
 
I love my sabian hhx powerride. Doesn't rig much, heavy as shit and the ping in the bell is euphoric. Actually bought this ride from word of mouth, never played the cymbal until it came in the mail, I was worried how it would sound and man its beautiful.

Well, why not find out what the drummer in Coldplay used on that, and then go for that? It seems to me that their recordings probably aren't so "mutated" by outboard gear that the chances are whatever he used for the recording probably sounds similar to the actual cymbal available. :)

You'll be annoyed at this response.

But really, go to your local drum shop and listen to a few different rides, you'll quickly get ride of the ones you don't like.

Also The ZXTs do ring for ages and aren't top of the line cymbals. If you buy an A custom or Z, unless they we're desinged to ring on forever...then they won't. They'll have a very nice sound.

Or as Tim said, find out what specific ride coldplay uses.
 
Well, I finally found out that Will uses a 22" Zildjian K Custom. Not nice for the budget :(.

lol...thanks for the suggestion about the drum shops, but that was part of the problem...I've already eliminated every ride that every shop in the area has in stock. Now none of them have had that K Custom, so it may do the trick. I'll just have to find some place somewhere that has at least one (hopefully more).

Think about it this way: If it's what you want, why bother buying something else? Just save the money and get it when you can afford it?

If you just put a piece of duct tape on the bottom of the ride you will get rid of the ring. The more tape, the less ring. You can even get it in different colors now a days. It's easy and low cost to try, like 1/2 cent for the tape. If you don't like it then spend the money on a new ride.

Personally, I have a sabian hh dry ride ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/441334/ ), but they are a couple of hundred. Tape is much cheaper.
 
I would save for the K Custom. I have the 20" version of that ride and love it. it's dry but not too dry and the bell cuts but also sounds very musical, its not just a ping.

It's really not a cool thing to do. Buy moongel and place it on the ride. That wil cut out some ringing. But NEVER resort to tape. :(

try to find a used zildjan k ride. I got one a few years ago, it was cheap and im very pleased with it. cymbals may fade a little in sound quality after a few years and if you buy a used one that you like then you dont have to worry bout that. :)

Please elaborate...........I'm fairly new to drumming and I've got tape on one of my cymbals. What makes this bad and what is moongel?
 
nothing wrong with tape, imho. don't moongels do the same thing? except you'll have a gelly lookin little pad on top the ride instead of a piece of tape hidden under the ride.
 
Yeah, I tape up my cymbals with duct tape when I need to cut down on the ring and volume. I think what the man is trying to say is that it can stain your cymbals and leave residue if it's left on that's all but impossible to remove.

If you need to tape up the cymbals, be sure to remove the tape VERY frequently (less than a week at the longest) and clean the cymbal.

I think it's better to find a drier cymbal in the long run. Yeah the Coldplay cymbal sounds pretty dry. If you're looking for a specific cymbal sound, talk to Jamie at Saluda Cymbals. He is fantastic to work with and can get you whatever cymbals sound you want, probably for less than $150.

Seriously though, if you don't like your ride and don't care about a ltitle tape residue, then try it out. Personally I would just save up and buy the ride that you want. That'll keep you happiest in the long run. However, buying used is also a wonderful way to acquire good gear at a great price.
 
Don't use friggin duct tape, get some actual Gaffers tape. It's as strong as duct tape and doesn't leave a residue. It's also cool for taping down cables or anything. It's a bit pricier than the standard grey fix-all, but well worth not having to clean that crap off later.

You can find it at FullCompass, or any theatrical supply company.
 
A suggestion, Zildjian A custom ping ride. Tight sound, and the resonance drops off pretty well. It will get washed over-overpowered if your band is pretty loud.
I agree, get gaffers tape! If your going to tape it. (gulp!) You spend a lot of money on your cymbals, and the ride is one of the most $$$. So, leaving tape on there after a while will leave that funky residue. Then your bass player is gonna ask what the hell is that funky grime on your ride cymbal... quite embarrassing. :eek:
 
Duct tape should be avoided. A moongel does the same thing though it might fall off. If you're going to use tape, masking tape works and is easily removable.
